The Journey to Next: The Challenge of Defining Ourselves

The Journey to Next: The Challenge of Defining Ourselves

That blinking cursor. The empty 'About Me' section. The internal debate—do I sound too braggy? Too boring? Sometimes the most challenging thing to do is describe ourselves, especially when it comes to our careers. Have you stuttered or hesitated when asked "Who are you?"? If you've ever struggled with this, you're not alone.

It's hard to objectively summarize ourselves because work can feel very personal. Oftentimes, we're too close to our own experience to describe it accurately. What seems "obvious" to you might be the most compelling part of your journey to others.

In my chats with our universal friend GPT, it's suggested that summarizing ourselves is made of three parts that require much self-reflection:

? Who you are beyond your job title

? What drives you and why you do what you do

? What makes you unique in your field

The self-reflection part is key and the why you do what you do is most resonant to me. Perhaps, this question is "What do you really love most"? Or “What is your root cause?”. In UX, we adopt a childlike mindset to ask the 5 Whys? It is a tactic to help identify the root cause.

Let's apply the 5 Whys method to uncover what truly drives me.

I love to build things through teamwork.

Why? Because the result is always more magical than if we build something alone.

Why? Because good teamwork can take us on a journey of discovery, tension, and release, into diamonds

Why? Because we all have different perspectives.

Why? We come from different backgrounds and experiences that color us into the cornucopia that we are and that’s special to me.

Why? I love people. I love sharing laughter just as much as I empathize with sharing pain. I love how different and the same people can be simultaneously.

Ok, let's try putting this all together in an About Me:

I am a creative catalyst who brings people together to develop technology-driven products that enhance our lives. My passion lies in human-centered design, not only as a final outcome but as a collaborative journey What sets me apart? I find joy in organizing chaos, fostering meaningful teamwork, and turning big ideas into reality.
