Journey to Net Zero: Scotland advances carbon capture technology

Scotland is making remarkable strides in the field of carbon capture, with innovative companies and institutions leading the way in developing sustainable solutions. In July 2023, it was reported that Carbon Capture Scotland Limited (CCSL) has secured a major deal with specialist investment manager Iona Capital to capture and re-use green CO2 from biomethane plants across the UK.

This collaboration aims to produce dry ice, a valuable resource for industries such as food, cold logistics, and pharmaceuticals, while helping these sectors achieve their Net Zero goals. Dry ice, commonly used in transportation, preservation, and cooling processes, serves as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional CO2 emissions. CCSL says it aims to remove one million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere annually.

The investment serves to create a sustainable and circular approach to carbon management and advances Scotland's journey towards becoming a Net Zero destination.

VisitScotland Business Events have for a long-time placed Net Zero policies at the top of their agenda, and when it comes to reaching Net Zero, VisitScotland Business Events’ Transformation Protocol connects business events strategists with key partners in the field, such as the Net Zero Technology Centre. Launched as part of the Aberdeen City Region Deal in 2017, the Net Zero Technology Centre has received substantial funding from both the UK and Scottish governments to become a leading technology hub for the North Sea energy sector.

Since its foundation, the Net Zero Technology Centre has been actively championing the role of technology in decarbonising the oil and gas industry. With a wealth of knowledge and experience in transitioning to Net Zero operations, Scotland is at the forefront of developing and implementing carbon capture and storage technologies.

The Energy Transition Zone is another Transformation Protocol partner that can contribute to business events that want to focus on Net Zero in the energy sector. The North East of Scotland has been synonymous with energy production for over half a century, and is now one of the most attractive locations in Europe for developing innovative low-carbon technologies.

The Energy Transition Zone will become a catalyst for manufacturing, research, development, testing and deployment, with significant opportunities in offshore wind, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage.

Patrick Lamont, Business Events Policy Manager, VisitScotland Business Events, said: “Scotland's commitment to carbon capture and sustainable energy solutions is commendable. Collaborations, such as those between CCSL and Iona Capital, which converts green CO2 into valuable dry ice, showcases the country's innovative approach to reducing carbon emissions across industries.

“Initiatives like VisitScotland Business Event's Transformation Protocol and the presence organisations like the Net Zero Technology Centre and Energy Transition Zone emphasise Scotland's dedication to fostering collaboration and driving the transition to a Net Zero economy, as well as promoting sustainable events.

“As Scotland continues to lead the way in carbon decommissioning, it serves as an inspiring model for other regions to follow, promoting a greener and more sustainable future for all.”

Transformation Protocol Partners

Net Zero Technology Centre

The Net Zero Technology Centre's purpose is to develop and deploy technology for an affordable net zero Energy Industry. It was created in 2017 as part of the Aberdeen City Region Deal (ACRD), with £180million of UK and Scottish government funding to?be the?go-to?technology centre?for the?North Sea?energy industry.

The Centre advocates of the role of technology in decarbonising the oil and gas industry.

ETZ – Energy Transition Zone

ETZ Ltd seeks to reposition the North East of Scotland as a?globally integrated energy cluster?focused on delivery of Net Zero. It is an attractive location in to develop and accelerate the commercialisation of innovative low-carbon technologies. The Energy Transition Zone will become a focal point and catalyst for high-value manufacturing, research, development, testing and deployment; with significant opportunities in offshore wind, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage.

Scotland’s commitment to excellence research makes it an ideal conference destination for international scientists and institutions and discuss strategies for making the world a better place and through the Transformation Protocol, connects global organisations with national expertise.
