The Journey of My Life into Sustainability

In the 70s and 80s, I roamed through life with a carefree spirit, basking in nature's unspoiled beauty, unaware of the ticking environmental clock. The word "sustainability" was yet to enter my vocabulary. My transformation began subtly, ignited by my young daughter Léa Lecocq . At the tender age of four, she came home from school, brimming with passion for sustainability—a newfound fervor sparked by her school's course. Her innocence and zeal were the catalysts for my awakening.

Our journey took a defining turn when she was six. Her fascination with the underwater world led us to scuba diving adventures. As we descended into the ocean's depths, surrounded by vibrant marine life, a profound realization dawned on me: the beauty we beheld was fragile and fleeting. My daughter’s wonder transformed into my resolve to protect these ecosystems.

In 2011, during our first dive in Kenya, we marveled at the pristine underwater world, blissfully ignorant of its imminent threats. Five years later, in 2016, we returned to the Seychelles and were confronted with the devastating sight of bleached corals—a stark reminder of our planet’s vulnerability. These contrasting experiences cemented my commitment to sustainability.

Transitioning to a sustainability-focused life was more than a career shift; it was a transformation of my entire being. When my daughter pursued her university studies in marine ecology and biology in Mauritius, our combined passion inspired us to establish an infrastructure dedicated to sustainability education and advocacy. This marked the birth of Léa Marie Lecocq Holding LTD , our family’s legacy of environmental stewardship.

Key milestones shaped our path. The heartbreaking coral bleaching in 2016 was a pivotal moment. The creation of my daughter's NGO, "7eme Ocean," in France in late 2018 and our participation at the "Salon de la Plongée" in Paris in 2019 were monumental steps. There, we exchanged ideas with the former French Minister of Environment and renowned photographer Laurent Ballesta, fueling our mission further. Establishing Léa Marie Lecocq Holding LTD in Mauritius solidified our commitment to a sustainable future.

Challenges abounded. The greatest was the widespread lack of sustainability education. While many recognized the need for action, few knew where to begin. Overcoming the misconception that sustainability initiatives are costly with poor ROI was another hurdle. A particularly challenging project involved setting up an education program in France focused on marine ecosystems. Despite financial and logistical difficulties, our persistence turned a three-month project into a 1.5-year endeavor, teaching us the power of perseverance.

Among our many initiatives, a renewable energy project in South Africa stands out. Transitioning a community from carbon energy to solar power was a monumental achievement. We meticulously calculated the carbon offset, showcasing the tangible benefits of carbon-free energy and inspiring others.

Success in sustainability transcends frameworks and reports. It lies in the transformation of people’s understanding and their actions. Education is paramount, fostering a generation with a deep appreciation for sustainability. The smiles of colleagues and heartfelt thanks are true measures of our positive impact.

My philosophy on sustainability revolves around a simple question: What can I do for the planet and its people? It’s about making the world better for everyone. This guiding principle ensures my efforts contribute to a legacy of positive change.

Embracing new technologies like AI can enhance sustainability efforts by optimizing resource usage and providing data-driven insights. However, it’s crucial to consider the carbon and labor costs before implementation, ensuring the positive outcomes outweigh the offsets.

Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires prioritizing actions like clean water and sanitation, quality education, and responsible consumption and production. Focusing on these areas can manage other interconnected goals more effectively.

After traveling for over a decade and visiting more than 60 countries, I’ve witnessed both the worst and best in sustainability efforts. I hope my legacy will be one of positive impact, contributing to a more sustainable world. My future aspirations include driving innovative sustainability projects, mentoring the next generation of leaders, and expanding our reach to create greater environmental and social benefits.

Ultimately, I aspire to leave behind a world where sustainable practices are the norm, not the exception, and where future generations can thrive in a healthier, more equitable environment. By fostering partnerships and leveraging technology, I aim to amplify the impact of our initiatives and inspire others to continue the work towards a sustainable future long after I’m gone.
