Journey to Liberating Structures (I): Intro

Preface

When you feel included and engaged, do you do a better job? Do you think teams in which people work well together produce much better results? Have you noticed the best ideas often come from unexpected sources? Do you want to work at the top of your intelligence and give the same opportunity to others?

This is a quote from https://www.liberatingstructures.com/. The below table is the ideas and principles of Liberating Structures:

Liberating structures principles

For now, some of them look familiar- others, not so much. Regardless, the quote from before aligns so well with the questions I raise nearly every day. It intrigues me to a point, at which not giving these ideas a try would be a regret. Therefore, I would like to make a commitment: every other week, I will focus on one principle at a time, incrementally and will share my experience through an article. In no more than 68 weeks time, I should have covered and applied all of them in unison.

What?

Every other week I will try to write an article in the following structure:

  • My understanding of a principle
  • What did I do?
  • What did I learn?
  • Was it effective?
  • Synergy with other principles applied.
  • Mention next week's principle.

As per recommendations, we will go through each principle from top left moving towards the bottom right. This time- it is a week 0 article- just taking a peek at the idea and justifying why am I trying to work through it.

Why?

I am not a manager and I have no intention of becoming one. I am a software engineer. However, I do care about the communities I belong to and I would like most of them. I do not just idle and wish for the best, I am involved in a variety of organizing activities through which I try to give my best and help. A different perspective and fresh ideas definitely help and that is exactly why I will be going through this in the following months.

So that's it for that is all for this week! I hope that you found this as intriguing as I did :) Next time we will be delving into the first principle- Design Elements.
