Journey of Learning
Sometimes short journeys become eventful and gives you experiences, and sometimes long journey goes so smooth that it only gives memories but do not come with the experience of facing difficult situation.
My career journey is not very long but it has been eventful, chaotic and difficult. It gave me multidimensional experiences. I have worked with five organizations where all these five organization were offering different products/services there I have worked with 14 team leaders/bosses and I have worked with different roles, departments and projects like Distribution Management, Territory/Area Sales Management, Key Account Management, Global Account Management, Global Communication Management; Buyer Management, Buying Office Management, Global Project Management etc.
All through this career path I have learned lots of important lessons, some came along with the tasks and situation and some lessons were very costly and came with unwanted consequences. I thought of sharing some of the learning, and I hope this will help professionals.
Please understand your Job Description
In majority offices in Bangladesh the JDs are misrepresenting. HR tends to make the Role look attractive with less tasks to perform. Well, be sure of the fact that no one will pay you more for doing less. Get to know your tasks in detail please. Ask hundreds of questions but get the data from your concern leader.
Understand every task while you take over responsibility
When you are taking over responsibility from anyone please try to understand it and go through the tasks cautiously. If someone tells you that s/he will perform a task of yours please understand that its temporary, do not take it for granted.
Please do not trust everyone
You cannot really distrust everyone and keep on working in that organization practically. All that I am referring to is please be cautious while placing your trust on someone at office; as majorly it turns back as boomerang.
Office Gossip can be deadly
You thought you were just participating in an office gossip; but you never realized that someone picked up what you said and added some salt, spice and color and presented to that person. It could be enough to make sure that you will have a difficult time ahead at office.
Understand your Leader’s way of work
Your leader will not change his way of work for you, rather you must change your-self for him. If his way is not correct, try to let him know that but do not push to change that or go against him; that would never help you to grow.
Be cautious regarding arguments
Please be cautious while participating in any argument, sometimes people takeout only the harsh comment you made rather taking the inner meaning of it. It is natural that a lot of people will not agree with you on a lot of issues; please try to accept it.
Do not go against your senior
I have not seen any situation where management accepted juniors stands against a senior. If you are going against senior, then you are digging you own grave unless you are husband of the owner’s daughter ??
Adding value
When you are working for an organization for long then seniors look forward to seeing you are doing things out of your prescribed roles to add value to the organization or department. Think of something new, be innovative.
Be ready for change
From my career what I have experienced is in majority situation I have seen changes are on the way, no years went by with repeated situation something somewhere will change. So be ready to face it. Be open to accept it and try to fit in to the new situation rather than trying to defend it.
Have patience
Patience is the biggest solution to all problems. If you have patience, then you will be able to see the beauty of it. There is a hadith “Patience is a tree with thorns, but its fruits are tastiestâ€. I have seen many of my problems were resolved on its own without my initiatives when I kept my patience.
The way people are different, similarly situations and problems are also different too; still, taking care of above factors will surely add value to your journey; it would make your journey much smoother and hurdles free In Shaa Allah!
