A Journey with “Kutty Mani”: The Car That Changed a Family’s Life.

.A couple of days back, while traveling from Bangalore to Chennai, I witnessed something special on the Bangalore Trunk Road. I noticed a humble Nano, carrying a family of four—a husband, wife, and their two young kids—riding with purpose. We happened to stop at the same tea shop, and as I watched the man clean his car’s windshield and check the tires, I felt compelled to ask him about the car’s performance and mileage. He gave me a warm smile and said, “I don’t know much about performance, sir, but it gives around 20-22 km per liter.”

Then, he told me his story, a story that touched me deeply.

Not too long ago, he used to travel with his family from Chennai to Wallajah on a Splendor bike. It was a tough journey, with the rain, heat, and exhaustion taking a toll on his young children. This Nano was actually his employer’s car, used mostly for errands. But when his boss decided to sell it after buying an MG Comet, this man saw an opportunity to give his family something safer and more comfortable.

With a salary of 22k INR, affording the car seemed impossible. He did what he could—he arranged 1.2 lakh INR by pledging his wife’s jewelry, hoping that his boss might reduce the price for him. When he met with his employer and explained the situation, his boss listened quietly, then disappeared inside the house for a while.

Moments later, the employer and his wife invited him inside. Standing before a large photo of Lord Thiruthani Murugan, they handed him the car keys and said, “Keep this car; it’s yours. We appreciate your loyalty.” The employer’s wife, touched by the man’s story, even offered him 2000 INR to cover the interest on his wife’s pledged jewelry. They insisted he bring his family to take their first drive home in their “Kutty Mani.”

For the past year and a half, this “toy car,” as some mocked it, has been the family’s pride and joy. It’s given them safety, convenience, and dignity. And while others see it as a small, cheap car with “zero safety,” to him, this Nano holds a value beyond measure.

In his phone, he has his employer’s photo on his wallpaper and Ratan Tata’s photo as his WhatsApp DP—a man he respects deeply.

As he shared his story, I thought about a scene in the film Mei Azhagan, where a simple secondhand bicycle changes someone’s life. Sometimes, we think such acts of kindness only happen in the movies. But here was Kumaran and his “Kutty Mani”—a real-life story of empathy, generosity, and the power of seeing people’s true needs.

Ratan Tata’s vision for the Nano wasn’t to build a “cheap” car; it was to offer an affordable, dignified alternative to motorcycles for families like Kumaran’s. Though the market may not have embraced the Nano as intended, Tata’s vision didn’t fail. This story shows that vision alive on Indian roads, supporting families in ways many can’t imagine.

Thank you, Ratan Tata, for dreaming a dream of dignity and safety for every Indian. And thank you to Kumaran’s employer, a true gem, who saw beyond numbers and chose humanity.
