A JOURNEY IN A JUDGMENT
(ReachLawyer Friday Talk Show)
Struggle of Samata
Floyding: Desiccating Democracy Part IV
Samata, founded by Ravi Rebbapragada decades ago, is a grass root organisation that has long fought for protection of the rights of tribals of the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. In its decades of work, Samata has faced innumerable challenges. Facing violence from every quarter, be it from the police, forest administration, corporate lobbies or those who believe in revolution, the organisation has weathered it all. Deeply intertwined with Samata's journey is the journey of a person who built a team, a family and lived with these communities for the best part of his life. Through the course of its work, Samata took up a legal battle against the Birlas, fought it all the way to the Supreme Court of India, and most importantly, won a landmark case for tribal communities in a judgment that has since redefined public discourse on the rights of tribal communities in India (Samata v. State of Andhra Pradesh, 1997). Apart from his work with Samata, Ravi Rebbapragada also founded mines, minerals & PEOPLE, a national alliance of people affected by mining in India.
He will discuss his journey and that of the tribals of eastern ghats; their troubles, travails, traumas that ensued; and also of the states’ efforts in seeking to undermine the emancipatory promise of the Samata judgement.
