A Journey of Growth and Connection with An Overseas Community

Before embarking on her latest Youth Expedition Project (YEP) journey to Laos, Janellia had previously participated in two virtual volunteering projects with Laotian communities in 2019 and 2020 during COVID-19, as part of her volunteering club, WeeVolunteer. These experiences ignited her passion for connection and community service for the Laos community, setting the stage for what was to come.

In the lead-up to her YEP trip, Janellia also made a personal visit to Laos with friends to immerse themselves in the culture and meet the locals. When the opportunity arose to physically return for YEP, she knew it was something she could not pass up. This was her chance to deepen her relationships with the community, especially since her club focuses on long-term, sustainable volunteering.

The journey presented many valuable lessons for her. As the chairperson of her club and a YEP leader, Janellia faced the challenge of balancing her personal growth with the logistics of the trip and the well-being of her peers. Fortunately, her team was incredibly supportive, helping to ensure everything ran smoothly. She also made sure she was well-prepared before the trip, aligning her goals and intentions as both a participant and a leader. This clarity enabled her to engage meaningfully with both partners and her team.

Despite the long journey, what kept her motivated throughout her trip were the interactions with the locals. “Every single meeting was welcomed with kind words, open hearts and utmost enthusiasm,” Janellia reflected. Even with their limited English, the locals expressed gratitude and kindness to Janellia and her team for their efforts.

One of Janellia’s most cherished memories was playing with the students. They led her to their play area in the school's backyard, where they taught her how to mould animal figurines using a mixture of soil and water. Together, they created homes for these animals with materials like bricks, leaves, and bottles. It reminded her of playing house with friends when she was younger. Their innocence and willingness to share their world with strangers left a lasting impression.

Navigating cultural differences can be tricky, but Janellia believes that knowledge is power. Being curious and asking questions respectfully is key. Cultural exchanges should be a two-way street, so it is important to share one’s own experiences as well. Acknowledging others’ stories during discussions and responding thoughtfully helps foster deeper connections. Additionally, being mindful of one’s actions is crucial, as even small gestures can have significant consequences.

Janellia encourages other youths to seize opportunities like YEP, as being part of something bigger than oneself is an experience that's hard to replicate elsewhere.

“Read up on the experience, understand what it entails, and if it's within your comfort zone, take the plunge. If it’s outside your comfort zone, take the plunge anyway!”
