A Journey to Generate Impactful Profits

My journey to generate impactful profits for businesses began with a simple realization: great companies are built on the foundation of great people. One of the best ways to recruit and retain great people is to be a great employer. And one of the ways to have positive people impact is to create and foster great jobs.

This belief has been at the cornerstone of my professional activities, shaping my approach to building successful, scalable businesses: namely, investing in and creating great outcomes for people. I believe companies that create great outcomes for people, either their employees, their customers, or both, are more likely to win in their markets and can achieve greater financial success. As a result, we look for opportunities where positive people impact can be an alpha generator for financial return.?

My drive toward this approach started in 2016 when I began working on building what became Two Sigma Impact, inspired by a challenge to do something as a business in a for-profit way about a societal issue, namely the future of work. I began to study what others were doing in this area. TPG with The Rise Fund and Bain with the Double Impact Fund, for example, were building private equity-style investment businesses endeavoring to have a double-bottom line.

That objective continued to evolve over the next several years, and with help and inspiration from others, I’ve become focused on finding opportunities where companies can achieve increased financial success by contributing positively to the world. In fact, I believe that businesses generating impactful profits are capable of repeatable, scalable, and sustainable impact.?

Philanthropy, which also has an important role in addressing societal challenges, is wonderful, but it only extends so far as the philanthropist. Governments can also have a role in making an impact, but governments are often rife with many conflicts and issues. On the other hand, successful businesses can be self-sustaining and grow.?

Successful companies that are growing and having a positive impact can make more of that impact. For example, by helping companies be better employers and have a better jobs strategy, they can recruit and retain excellent employees, have highly productive teams, and provide outstanding products and services to their customers. That’s a company that is highly likely to win in its market.?

I helped to found Focus Impact Partners in 2021, a private investment firm on a mission to amplify impact and generate impactful profits by bringing capital, expertise, and connections to socially forward companies.?
