Pat Armitstead New Artist Bio
Pats art sits under the umbrella title :-
“Art informed by encounters with humanity”
You see all of Pats art has a story related to her own or others journey.
Pat agrees with what Seth Godin has to say about art.
“Art is what we call the thing an artist does. Its not the medium or the oil or the price or whether it hangs on a wall or you eat it ! What matters most, what makes it matter is that the person who made it overcame the resistance , ignored the voice of doubt and made something worth making. Something risky, something human. Art is not in the eye of the beholder. It is in the soul of the artist.”
Pat Armitstead (1953 to current) is a multi talented creative who uses her skills as a dressmaker, milliner, camera person, sound and lighting assistant, continuity and special effects ( Flying Doctors TV show ), bodypainter, freelance journalist for all media Australia, Film and TV make up artist, improv actor, multi award winning speaker, multi award winning radio host and podcaster to create mixed media art, installations and performances that awaken all the senses and enthrall audiences.
She has worked as deputy stage manager on live stage shows such as Le Traviata, and been creative director of 10 documentaries. She has won 11 advertising awards for her work in film, and has toured internationally with Patch Adams on his Healing with Humour Tour, using improv acting, street theatre and clowning skills to entertain orphans .
Pat has studied Aboriginal art and culture since 1970, working with artists from Bundjalung tribe northern NSW and filming a documentary, recording the history of 4 elders from that same tribe. Her in depth understanding of the culture and symbolism has enabled her to create and tell stories that contribute towards healing the trans general rifts in Australia.
In 2004 Pat worked for 12 months with four Jungian psychotherapists exploring myths, legends, fairytales, symbolism, creating sculptures from cast body parts to transform perspectives. She works in a transformative way turning a 6 inch roll of plaster of paris into a sculpture depicting unrecognisable change. Her work since then has focused on using acrylics and plaster sculptures often mounted on canvas to craft stories that shift perceptions and heal the wounds of grief, loss and trauma. There is a proliferation of primary colours, symbolism and storytelling .
She has shared her casting art in exhibitions and on stages with speaking greats such as Jack Canfield, Lindsey Adams, Bruce Lipton, Keith Abraham, Wayne Berry, Ed Tate, John Demartini, and Patricia Fripp.
With a group of artists in New Zealand Pat helped raise $350,000, buy an old KFC building off council for $1, and oversee the refurbishment to create a pristine gallery that has been self supporting ever since. She was commissioned by the gallery to create the opening piece entitled “Lady in Red – Esteem dances within.” ( See above featured image)

“Pat is an artistic creative person that has passion and skills that are beyond the ability of the average mind. Pat can teach techniques that unleash the restrictions of our lives and help you become a creative thinker through her fabulous teaching and coaching skills. I have always admired Pat’s ability to combined professionalism and artistic, creative together. We hope to see her showcasing her talents once again on the world stage at the NZ Body Art Awards. ”
She has been described by Dr Ric Coleman as “Australasia’s answer to Patch Adams”, and her PR agent calls her “a spiritual midwife, delivering people out of the darkness.”
Thankyou for reading . I want people to realise their multi talented potential. Strategy alone is not going to take us through the coming years. Creative expression, in all its forms will be pivotal.
This is all in preparation for my first solo exhibition and I appreciate the new interest in considering creative expression in the workplace.
