The Journey from Surviving to Thriving
Refugees are among the most vulnerable populations in the world, forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, or other forms of violence. The United States has long been a destination for refugees, providing a safe haven and opportunity to rebuild their lives. However, the process of resettlement can be difficult, and many refugees struggle to move beyond mere survival in their new communities. Building capacity within the refugee community is essential to ensuring that individuals can achieve self-sufficiency and thrive in their new homes.
Once refugees arrive in the United States, they face a variety of challenges. Many are dealing with trauma from their experiences in their home countries or in refugee camps, and may have limited English proficiency or education. Refugees and asylum seekers can also have excellent English proficiency and a dynamic skill set but their status bars them from many opportunities. They may also face discrimination and cultural barriers that can make it difficult to find employment, access healthcare, or navigate their new community. While religion is not the master narrative, we do not have to tippy toe around the fact that Islam is what the public "sees" before the individual. Navigating religious discrimination in America can be traumatic for persons who have come from predominantly Muslim countries.

To address these challenges and support refugees in building capacity beyond mere survival, a variety of programs have emerged. For example, Our Helpers UPskill program currently offers Google IT certification scholarships. The workforce development team offers wrap around services to clients before, during, and after their job search. Our Helpers is also promoting total wellness with Mental Health First Aid trainings that empower adults as they struggle through mental health challenges. Our Helpers is working to address trauma and build resilience. Our English as a Second Language training is virtual, allowing ease and flexible for adults with transportation and childcare challenges. We are removing barriers and helping adults to transition their dreams of success to workable plans.
Ultimately, building capacity within the refugee community is essential to ensuring that individuals can move beyond mere survival and thrive in their new homes. By providing targeted services and support, as well as opportunities for leadership and community engagement, organizations and programs are helping refugees to build resilience, develop skills, and contribute to their new communities.
