The Journey from Data to Big Data to 'Just' Data
I'm old enough to remember when BI (Business Intelligence) meant having a set of tabular reports that listed transactions for an area of the business with grouping and sorting limited to what was in place when the report was created. The world is a very different place today and I'm glad to say that those days are gone but I do like to reminisce sometimes...
The Transition from Business Intelligence to Business Analytics
During the first evolution of Business Intelligence (BI 1.0), the IT team effectively controlled the tools and any reports or updates had to be requested by the business and typically involved a development, deployment and test cycle..however, things moved on quickly from there.
BI 2.0 progressed things to a more web based model that allowed for exploratory analysis of data, but for most companies IT were still the gatekeepers of all things Data related.
At this point, the visual representation of information moved towards KPI Scorecards, Charts and richer, interactive visualisations.
This brings us to BI 3.0, where self-service and analytics comes to the fore.
In this new world, collaboration is king and the business are taking a lead role in the application of Data Visualisation and Analytics tools that are available to all.
This is driven by the emerging understanding that the organisations data is a strategic asset that can be used to optimise company performance across all operations.
'Big Data' and Analytics
I did an interview recently for the Sunday Business Post (17th June 2018) that captures my thoughts on what 'Big Data' is (or was). Technology moves fast but not as fast as business.
By creating software that challenges conventional ways of doing things - we are enabling organisations to put their data to work, smartly and simply. If this strikes a chord with you, get in touch to find out more at www.glantus.com
