Journey-From Classroom to the Real Industry (pt. 2)

It has been 2 months since I stepped into Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) as HSE trainee, the experience has been truly enlightening. As time goes on, keeping the momentum and passion in grabbing the experience would be the key I have to be consistent on. Surrounding with all kind and warm-hearted people aided me in this learning milestone, which was also another thing I am always thankful for. <3

Here is a glance sharing on few activities I involved in, for the past month:

STOP WORK AUTHORITY (SWA) CAMPAIGN

The aim of implementing SWA campaign among the staff and all contractors in PIC is to cope with the Unsafe Act & Unsafe Condition (UAUC). All individuals are responsible towards the safety and health of another individual, hence anyone with a "SWA Card" can initiate a stop of working individuals, work process and plant, depending on the classification of the UAUC. Besides of distributing the safety responsibility and awareness, individuals who implement and report the UAUC would also be awarded. The person who stopped their work will not receive any punishment, instead just correct the UAUC and continue working right after the safe act and safe conditions are implemented. Below are several attachments of SWA campaign that was held in different plant areas in PIC, which basically involved the operation safety team. Interesting right?

MINISTRY OF HEALTH JOHORE STATE VISIT TO PIC

Another amazing opportunity was to receive all medical doctor guests from the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Johore into PIC. Exposure towards how and what medical or occupational health be implemented in the real industry was the main focus of this program. Despite connecting the Johore Ministry of Health with the PETRONAS (PRPC) occupational health team, I personally also enjoyed chit chat with a few doctors regarding the health facility issues since I had a tiny internship experience in the district of health. We had the opportunity to visit the in-house medical services centre, One Team One Goal Center (OTOGC), and have been briefed on the ambulance facility, Urine and Drug Alcohol Testing (UDAT) program, Respirator Fit Testing (RFT) in PIC.

HEALTH SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT (HSE) WEEKLY MEETING

As usual, the HSE weekly meeting would be done in the morning to update and notify on the raising issues or department programs. For instance, stated below were the highlighted points in the meeting:

1. Odour report & management, updates from the environment team.
2. Cleaning of the Sulphur Pond.
3. Training of trainer (ToT), specifically for chemical exposure monitoring update system.
4. PETRONITA event for "Women's Health Day 2024" involve external guests and spouses into PIC.
5. Industrial Hygiene Ventilation "Confined Space" Training.

FOOD & WATER SAFETY (FWS)

Apart from that, I had a chance to in-depth involved in the revision of L3 Food & Water Safety Procedure according to the new FWS PETRONAS Technical Standard (PTS). For instance, some changes in terms, checklist form, and caterer registration flow were done to meet the focal and PETRONAS requirements. Then, the changes were communicated with the caterer through engagement with the food and service provider in PIC. In terms of updating the PETRONAS external caterer Master Checklist (Johor), the Occupational Health Committee rescheduled the inspection for an external caterer within and outside the PIC.

PETRONITA EVENT

The collaboration between PETRONITA Pengerang with OH HSE, in-house medical centre, Ministry of Health (Johor), iCARE, LPPKN, Pengerang Zumba club, and MamaCare on organizing Women's Health Day 2024. Mental health screening, blood donation, massage, emergency response, women's health talk, and women's health screening were the main activities for the rest of the day. Besides, for the Mothers' Day Special, a talk on 'Boundless love: Navigating Parenthood with Courage' was also held. It was a good experience organizing events and answering a bundle of my curiousness with updating my knowledge such, as killing two birds with one stone.

HEAT STRESS AREA MONITORING

Heat stress area monitoring was conducted together with the Industrial Hygiene team at 3 points of each area at one of the plants inside the PIC. From the results obtained, there were actions that need to be taken to address the issues such as ventilation and cultivation of the worker's awareness towards heat stress management. Therefore, the OH team came out with several broadcast posters related to heat stress awareness and management, such as 'Beat the Heat' and 'Top Tips to Manage Heat Stress'.
