A Journey from Brazil to Canada and Back

A Journey from Brazil to Canada and Back

Five years ago, Emilie Brunet Zeni and I boarded a plane bound for Montreal, carrying seven suitcases brimming with clothes—the remnants of our former lives. As we recently returned to Brazil, the effects of reverse cultural shock began to settle in. In this moment of reflection, I'm reminded how life's journey navigates us through uncharted territories, forging us in ways we could never predict. Join me as I share some fragments of this five-year odyssey—an expedition into growth, challenges, and triumphs.

Cultural Exploration and Linguistic Adaptation

The pivotal decision to uproot our lives for Canada in 2018 was steeped in love, a commitment solidified through marriage to a Canadian woman. Stepping onto Canadian soil, I confronted the stark reality of cultural shock and linguistic immersion. Mastering not only expressions and accents but also the intricate web of non-verbal cues became a daily endeavour, a dance of adaptability woven within the complex tapestry of Canadian society. It took time and relentless effort to adapt to seemingly simple nuances, such as the speed at which elevator doors close or the social custom of diving straight into conversations rather than exchanging greetings.

Confronting the Winter Ordeal

Canadian winters, notorious tests of endurance, played out their challenges in Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Regina. The unyielding grasp of the cold served as a stark reminder that resilience isn't just external—it emanates from within. The seasons of adversity functioned as crucibles, molding not only the body but the spirit as well. It's no wonder Canadians actively combat the cold with myriad activities, including music and ballet concerts, volunteering, and embracing winter sports.

Nostalgia and Personal Growth

Amid Canada's fierce winters and enchanting summers, an ache for my Brazilian roots would periodically stir. The bonds of family, the echoes of missed friendships, the familiar cadence of my mother tongue—all these cherished fragments of Brazil were ever-present. Amid this nostalgic blend, I embarked on a voyage of self-discovery. The pangs of separation transformed into catalysts propelling me toward embracing novel experiences and fostering personal evolution.

Revealing the Hunter Profile

This journey unravelled facets of my identity I hadn't anticipated. While in Brazil, I primarily saw myself as a farmer, a cultivator of relationships. Yet, a previously unforeseen identity emerged in Canada—an assertive business developer, a hunter poised to seize opportunities. Embracing this newfound persona, I excelled at forging connections, building bridges within the intricate landscape of Canadian business while reshaping how I perceived myself.

Friendships and Collaborations

Canadian executives, a canvas of benevolence and camaraderie, etched indelible marks on my journey. Their generosity and selflessness in forging connections laid the bedrock for a network that propelled me forward. In the dynamic business realm, authentic bonds are a form of currency. With heartfelt gratitude, I reflect on the lessons I've imbibed from these remarkable individuals.

Rediscovering the Art of Adult Connections

Nurturing friendships as adults is akin to an intricate dance of vulnerability. The shared experiences along the way unveiled the vast expanse of the human heart's capacity to accommodate new bonds, defying the constraints often attributed to age. This revelation shattered preconceived notions, illuminating the profound nature of relationships formed in the later stages of life. The deep connections I forged through church, work, and volunteering in Canada remain an enduring treasure.

Academic Renaissance and Global Bonds

During this trajectory, the allure of academia rekindled its flame. I successfully transferred my Brazilian university credits and earned a Canadian Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. This endeavour set the stage for even greater heights as I embarked on graduate studies in Theology at the University of Toronto. This academic expedition exposed me to a distinct scholastic culture, amplifying my critical thinking faculties. Moreover, within Canada's diverse educational milieu, I found friendships with people from every corner of the globe—a testament to Canada's global reputation as a beacon for international students.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Within Canada's rich tapestry, each new flavour embarked me on a metaphorical journey of self-exploration. Getting to know new tastes while relinquishing the familiar mirrored my personal transformation. This expedition unearthed dimensions of my identity that lay dormant beneath the surface, awaiting discovery.

Return to Brazil: A Transformed Perspective

Back on Brazilian soil, the resonance of my Canadian chapter forms an invaluable foundation. Armed with insights from cultural contrasts, unyielding winters, and cherished connections, I stride into this new chapter of life with renewed vigour and enriched insight. As I distance myself from the experience, I am sure that further revelations about how deeply this journey transformed me will come to light.
