On the journey to the first world
It has been almost a couple of weeks since we last posted our newsletter, and a lot has changed since then. The time gone by has seen major developments and revelations in terms of the government's efforts to make India a developed country in the next 25 years. Milestones were witnessed, statements were made and a big policy was also launched. What has strung these events is the common thread of the fact that it has been realised, though later than never, that logistics is the need of the hour, the backbone of a strong economy, and it needs to be strengthened if we want to move forward. So this edition of What's Cooking in Logistics brings to you various such events that mark India's ongoing journey to the first world.
The National Logistics Policy (NLP) was unveiled by the Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi in New Delhi, in the presence of various Union Ministers. The event was also attended by a large group of stakeholders from Indian logistics and supply chain sector, as well as policy makers. According to Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Trade and Commerce, the National Logistics Policy will act as a double engine for the economy, along with the Gati Shakti National Masterplan.
Continuing its streak of record monthly freight loading, Indian railways for 24 straight months, in August recorded best-ever monthly freight loading of 119.32 million tonne (MT), the Ministry of Railways informed, noting that the incremental loading in August was 8.69 MT, a growth of 7.86% over the same month in 2021.
A Niti Aayog report titled 'Transforming Trucking in India: Pathways to Zero-Emission Truck Deployment’ released on Friday suggests that India's trucking market is expected to grow over four times, 4 million in 2022 to roughly 17 million trucks, by 2050. The report further asks financial institutions to structure more favorable financing solutions for zero-emission trucks. The report said adding that India's trucking market is expected to grow over 4x by 2050 -- fuelling the nation's economy and transportation emissions."

Earlier this month, clean fuel company Blue Energy Motors (BEM) launched India’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled green truck manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune, closely followed by an announcement on September 12th that it has launched its first LNG trucks with BS VI-compliant engines. The organization will send off its first trucks with FPT's BS VI-compliant engines, capable of decreasing CO2 emissions up to 30% contrasted with 'conventional solutions'.
According to the latest data published by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for July 2022, the air traffic for freight increased from 259,168 MT in July 2021 to 275,032 MT in July 2022, exhibiting an increase of 6%. For Q1 2022, the freight movement increased 8.8% from 997,711 MT (Q1 FY 2021) to 1,085,700 MT.
In line with the recently launched National Logistics Policy (NLP), the Odisha state government has been preparing its own policy to create logistics and warehousing infrastructure and to address transport-related challenges. The state policy is at its last stage of preparation as a lot of consultations are being done at different levels in view of the involvement of multiple departments.
