The journey to finding a perfect wig

The journey to finding a perfect wig

I have been suffering from Alopecia for about 9 years (started in 2008). I first realised that I needed a wig because I could no longer cover my patches, I bought a synthetic wig (September 2009) as I did not know anything about wigs and hair at that time. I was passing the same wig shop in Notting Hill Gate every day as I was going to work, so this was the only place I had in mind when I was buying my first wig.

After 5 months I felt the wig was not nice at all, it costed me £500, wasn't a great fit and didn't look natural as the hair looked very plastic. So, I considered a custom made wig for a better fit and the next place I found was in Old Street. I had been quoted £3000 to get this done as it would be made out of Brazilian hair and I was told that it would last me for many years. Sold! I was very excited to be getting my first human hair wig considering there was a lead time of over 3 months (July 2010).

The way these wigs were applied was with a glue so I had it on permanently. I knew it needed maintenance but I found very difficult to wash my new hair - my head was very itchy, especially when playing sport, going to the gym or simply during the hotter summer months. In the end this wig got matted and tangled so I could not use it anymore which brought tears to my eyes after such an investment. I have had 3 wigs all together from this business (the best one has lasted for 10 months) but later found this business to have gone bust.

After this time I experienced new hair growth and could foresee life again without a wig (June 2012) I decided to have micro rings extensions to put in once my own hair had grown out - again I did not know too much about extensions back then. It added real volume to my look for a short while and boosted my confidence. However, this was short-lived as I started to lose the hair again and in hindsight putting in extensions was probably not the best decision as it made the hair loss even worse.

So I had to resort to a wig again, however this time I had more than one to hand, also I had learned how to better maintain them and I was able to put them on by myself (using the tape and the glue). In 2014 my hair grew back again, so the wigs went to one side and I started using Russian clip-in extensions to achieve the full hair effect. By this time I had learned a lot about hair itself and knew that Russian hair really is the best in the business. This hair really does last for life as it is a completely different quality to all the ordinary hair we can buy online (like Indian hair or ‘European hair’ - which is in fact over-processed Chinese and Asian hair with use of silicone to make the hair look nice).

I had this much hair and clip-ins until early 2016 but I again started to lose hair ever so gradually - day by day a bit of hair would fall until I had little option but to put a wig on again (September 2016)

This time my wig was much different! It was made out of Virgin Russian Hair, and it is one that I can take off anytime I want. So no more glue, no more tape, no itchy scalp, no discomfort and I can finally feel my scalp!

I had a few more wigs designed and felt I had learnt so much from my own experiences that I could start designing my own. I believe in the quality of Russian Hair, whilst expensive it truly is a long-term investment and so my journey begins to help people with similar medical issues as mine - they can be reassured from my understanding.

I have few wigs at home now and change them as I feel - for example I have one specifically for exercising! I am also using hair wraps and I am confident to take my wig off anytime and anywhere - I would not have been able to do this before.

It’s been a long journey but I have finally found a perfect wig, that looks so natural and I feel comfortable wearing. I know that no one else but you reading this article and my customers know that I am wearing a wig!
