Journey to Dream

Journey to Dream

As I sit down to reflect on the past year, I am overwhelmed with a profound sense of gratitude and accomplishment. This journey, which began nearly a decade ago, has been one of resilience, persistence, and unwavering belief. In case you didn’t know, I had been applying for the NCAA Postgraduate Internship since 2015, hoping to join the 2016-17 cohort. Every year since that first interview and my visit to the National Office in November 2015, the application process became almost ritualistic. I didn’t need reminders from Leadership Development; I knew that if it was my father's birthday on August 3rd, the applications would soon open. Labor Day weekend always meant one thing: I had to submit my application. I did this dance for nearly a decade, driven by a passion that refused to fade.?

Fast forward to the Fall of 2022, I had a candid conversation with my family and made the decision that this would be my final attempt. It felt like a Kobe Bryant moment—just a year earlier almost to the exact date, I tore my Achilles, and like Kobe, I pushed through the pain - but instead of walking to the free throw line - it was driving myself home, changing clothes, and attempting to take a shower before heading to the emergency room.? I knew I had to give it everything, and I did. That decision led to an incredible journey that I’m now ready to share—a journey that has been more than just an internship; it has been a transformative chapter in my life, filled with learning, growth, mentorship, and unforgettable memories.?

When I first stepped into the building, I had no idea just how much I would be challenged, inspired, and ultimately changed by the experience. From the very beginning, I was entrusted with responsibilities that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Whether managing cases and engaging with compliance administrators, supporting committee governance, or participating in the legislative process, each task was an opportunity to grow and contribute meaningfully to the world of collegiate athletics.?

One of the most fulfilling aspects of this journey was the chance to be part of something bigger than myself. Collaborating on the development of leadership programs for higher education administrators, coaches, and student-athletes was a true privilege. Knowing that our work not only educated and empowered our membership but also reached secondary education administrators, coaches, and the parents of prospective student-athletes, gave me a profound sense of purpose. It was in these moments that I truly felt the impact of our collective efforts, knowing we were making a difference that would resonate far beyond our time together.?

My time at the National Office wasn’t just about tasks or projects—it was about the people. I had the unique opportunity to rotate among various teams in the Eligibility Center: from Core Processing, High School Review, Academic and Amateurism Review, Customer Service, Outreach and Strategic Partnerships, to Analytics and Innovation. Each rotation introduced me to new perspectives, challenges, and ways of thinking. But more than that, it introduced me to all of you. The relationships we’ve built, the mentorship I’ve received, and the camaraderie we’ve shared have made this experience truly special.?

Beyond the Eligibility Center, I immersed myself in every corner of the NCAA, from Championships to Academic and Membership Affairs, Inclusion, Leadership Development, Enforcement, Research, and even the Cafe and Basement. I felt I was there on borrowed time, knowing the exposure I received in 2015 had expanded my expectations of myself. I told myself, “I am here for a short time, not a good time.” But the truth is, I had a phenomenal time—because I persevered so much that I couldn’t afford to feel like I came up short.?

The lessons I’ve learned and reinforced during my time here will stay with me wherever I go. I’ve learned the power of collaboration and how great things can be achieved when we work together towards a common goal. I’ve reinforced the importance of adaptability, being open to change, and ready to tackle new challenges head-on. I’ve learned what it means to lead with integrity and to mentor with kindness and wisdom. In addition, I’ve learned that promoting diversity and inclusion is not just important—it’s essential. These lessons weren’t just taught; they were embedded in great people at the National Office. ?

Ultimately, my greatest experience has been coming into this role with working experience prior to the internship. Though it was a challenge, I am deeply thankful for the perseverance and patience that allowed me to be part of the 2023-24 cohort. This journey has not just been about the pursuit of a position; it has been about the realization of a dream, the culmination of years of effort, and the beginning of a new chapter. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey—I am forever grateful.?

A special thank you to my 23-24 Cohort! We pushed each other, we held each other accountable and on occasion had tough conversations. We are forever connected!?

As I prepare to take the next step in my career, I want to thank each and every one of you for being part of this incredible journey. The experiences I’ve had and the lessons I’ve learned here will stay with me forever. I am leaving with a heart full of gratitude and a deep appreciation for the remarkable work we’ve done together.?

Thank you for believing in me, for challenging me, and for making this past year one of the most impactful of my life. I look forward to staying in touch and to seeing all the amazing things that you will continue to achieve.?

With heartfelt thanks and warmest regards,?
