There’s no denying it, sometimes your career path has a lot of turns, roadblocks, and diversions. I’ve heard a lot of stories, so this is what I fully expected to experience. Due to past experiences, I know that this is not just a comparison for one’s career journey but also life in general.
What is LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is really a huge database of professionals. It standardizes information entered by users into predefined “Profile Headline”, “Summary”, “Education”, “Company”, etc. categories. On the other hand, the more connections you have, the closer you will appear to more people – and the closer others that you might want to contact will appear to you. LinkedIn is a professional networking site that should be utilized as a powerful tool at every step in a professional’s career.
Why LinkedIn?
I’ll be honest with you in telling you that I first began using LinkedIn in evolution, so for the job seeker it goes without saying that LinkedIn can be a valuable resource. But this is not just about job seeking.
Think of LinkedIn as an extension of that, with the ability of directly connecting you to not only former classmates but also former colleagues. After you have graduated from college more and more people in your network are professionals, not classmates, so LinkedIn fills this gap nicely. This is the primary reason that I find most executives have a presence on LinkedIn, and this is a unique attribute to LinkedIn that no other social networking site at the present has.
Once you have a presence on LinkedIn, just as you can find your former colleagues, they can also find you. Once you fill in your profile, you are added to the database of more than 675 million users worldwide, the excellent search tools that are available on the social networking platform will allow people to easily find you.
I don’t want to be blunt in titling this “Looking for a Job” because even if you are not looking for a job, a network should be your insurance for your future career growth. Companies are organic entities whose needs change and do not and cannot promise you a guarantee that your job will be there 10 years from now, next year, or even next month. That is why you need to be on LinkedIn so that you can both find potential companies and recruiters as well as be found by them. Even if you are happy in your job, it can’t hurt to have a minimal presence and receive contacts from recruiters in your industry or specialty who may be able to help you out in the future. LinkedIn is a free career insurance!
One thing I would like to make clear is that LinkedIn is not a tool to sell your product on, and you may very well be suspended should you decide to spam people or message boards with adverts.
I have used LinkedIn to
a) Find potential customers/recruiters/Jobs/Articles,
b) Map out top-notch organizations/Activities,
c) look for potential service providers/Innovators
In a book called The $100,000+ Career, which is about how to find a job. It said that if you meet 100 people and meet 100 people that they introduce to you, you will most definitely be able to find a job. I have not tried out this exercise, but the whole idea is that you never know how someone, or someone that they know, may be able to help you out when you need it. I openly connect with anyone on LinkedIn because you never know how you can help them or vice-versa.
When I was working with WESTLINE SHIP MANAGEMENT PVT LTD, I got connected through LinkedIn to one the LPU Alumni “ANKITA MISHRA”, She advised me to take admission to MBA because of Diverse culture & Transformation of Education system. This could not have happened if a) we never connected and b) I did not ask for help me out.
On October 15th, 2017, I have seen one article on “Stand out, build a persona and launch your career—as a LinkedIn Campus Editor” published by Nirajita Banerjee. So, I applied for the campus editor program online & after filling up the below form, I was waiting for the results. I was nervous about the results because I don’t want to lose this rocking opportunity to work with LinkedIn as I wanted to be a part of it.
I applied with google form with basic questions like
- Have you ever led a club at your college?
- Have you ever organized an event at your institute?
- Why do you want to be a campus editor at LinkedIn?
- Why do you think you should be the campus editor for your university?
- What are the top 3 things you would like to see on LinkedIn?
- How would you pitch the idea of publishing on LinkedIn to a student at your university?
- Please share examples of your best work * (Stories, articles, videos, anything to showcase your best writing ability! Include links to published work or links to public Google docs.)
After applying I was waiting for the response from LinkedIn, as I always wanted to work with LinkedIn.
On 20th November 2017 (12:14 AM)
I was busy with my capstone project & placements, I received an email with (no subject) line from News Editor Nirajita Banerjee from LinkedIn stated that "You've been selected to join the Campus Editor Program LinkedIn for batch 207-18 & you'll be our force on the ground helping to bring dynamic #studentvoices to LinkedIn’s 700+ million members" & I was on cloud 9, as I always wanted to be the part of global workforce “LinkedIn”. Now I walk with the mission of LinkedIn “connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful”
The smile now becomes wider. As of now, I realized that the ball is in my court. All that work has sugarcoated into this one amazing moment in time.
I hope that I have opened your eyes if you are not currently on LinkedIn, and if you are a current member I hope I have provided you advice as to how you can become a more effective user of the platform to meet your own objective.
Then I was working with LinkedIn's News Editor Nirajita Banerjee to set goals, pitch article ideas, and edit content. Connecting with professors and administrators at your school to create awareness about student publishing on LinkedIn. Identifying great contributors on campus, and encouraging them to publish articles, updates, and videos & writing and creating content on LinkedIn’s publishing platform.
This program will boost my professional brand and visibility in a way that creates opportunities, & also will hone my writing, editing, and leadership skills.
I would like to thank LinkedIn for providing me that opportunity and I was delighted to have that title.
