Journey between disagreements to agreements

Disagreements within a team are a natural occurrence, especially when something new is initiated or some new addition takes place. People have different perceptions, and they will not be open for any sudden transition, sometimes it can create an impact of trust issues as well. Often these kinds of disagreements are helpful to improve communication and relationship in the team if managed, unbiased, effectively or efficiently. How we handle it in unbiased way has its own contribution in improving team dynamics, bring the confidence and trust within team members. Some key points that can help us in improving the transitioning process from disagreements to agreements:

  • As a first and foremost step is recognizing and acknowledging the presence of disagreements. This requires opposite person to openly express their differing opinions and perspectives. It's crucial to create a safe and inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable voicing their concerns. So, acknowledge and understand the perceptions people are bringing in.
  • Most of the times we don’t listen to understand, but we listen to react than respond. Let’s refrain that frame of mind. To move forward, team members must actively listen to one another why it has been initiated at first place and why people are not comfortable. This comprises giving each person the opportunity to explain their viewpoint without intrusion. Active listening nurtures understanding and empathy, enabling team members to see the issue from multiple angles.
  • Once each person has had a chance to express their opinions, the team can engage in constructive dialogue. This involves respectfully discussing the merits and drawbacks of each and everyone’s viewpoint, clarifying questions, and seeking common ground to kick start. The focus should be on finding a solution that best serves the team's goals and objectives than winning over other members.
  • At many cases, finding a middle ground through compromise is necessary. Team members should be open to adjusting their initial positions and exploring alternative solutions or cross functionalities. Collaboration becomes essential as the team works together to identify a resolution that satisfies everyone's needs to some extent.
  • Goal is to reach a consensus where the entire team agrees on a course of action. Consensus doesn't mean that every individual fully agrees with every aspect of the decision, but rather that everyone is willing to support and commit to the chosen path for the benefit of the team growth.
  • Once an agreement is reached, it's important to put it into action which is the biggest challenge. The team should monitor the implementation and evaluate the outcomes. Regular feedback sessions and open communication will help identify any necessary adjustments and ensure continuous improvement in the process.
  • The journey from disagreements to agreements provides an opportunity for learning and growth. It allows team members to develop their communication and collaboration skills, enhance their understanding of diverse perspectives, and foster a culture of trust and respect within the team.


Following all or part of the journey, teams can effectively navigate disagreements, transform them into opportunities for creativity and innovation, and ultimately strengthen their bonds as a cohesive unit.


Such a wonderful topic, Sree!! And you explained it so very well!! You rightly mentioned the very first step - to be open to difference of opinions. Accepting the fact that there could be different ways to look it is the first step. Everyone should be objective in their outlook and approach and NEVER become 'Subjective'. It is not the person you are disagreeing with but with the idea the person shared. Similarly, the recipient (or the person suggesting the change) should not consider the suggestion as a personal attack.
