A Journey with ASCE: Student to Professional Involvement

ASCE Young Professional Advancement

As a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Tyler in Civil Engineering, transitioning from the academic world to the professional realm was daunting. Fortunately, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) provides invaluable resources and opportunities to aid in this transition. From networking events and job postings to continuing education courses and technical resources, ASCE offers a wealth of benefits to help engineers navigate their careers at any stage. The association also provides was to network with professionals, and information to stay up to date in the civil engineering field. The primary advantage of an ASCE membership for new graduates and EIT Civil Engineers is the association’s role in aiding the transition from being a student to becoming a young professional.

ASCE From the Beginning: Student Chapter

Being a part of the university’s ASCE Student Chapter at UTTyler had a significant impact on my career outcomes and objectives. The student chapter exposed me to various aspects of Civil Engineering, beyond the course curriculum, by providing field trips to potential employers, manufacturing companies, and construction sites. The chapter organized speaking events twice a month, which provided an opportunity to network with the presenting engineers. Additionally, the student chapter conducted resume workshops and mock interviews with hiring managers from the area. These benefits have been crucial in my transition into the professional realm, as I gained valuable one-on-one experience with professionals within my industry. I had the honor of serving as an officer for UTTyler’s ASCE Student Chapter, first as the treasure and my senior year as the president. Taking on this responsibility as an undergraduate prepared me for leadership opportunities as a young professional engineer and honed my public speaking skills; which are surprisingly important in the civil engineering field.?

ASCE as a Professional: EIT to PE?

Becoming a member of ASCE as a young professional Civil Engineer can be a game-changer for one's career. From networking opportunities and access to technical resources to discounted professional services and professional development opportunities, ASCE provides a wide range of benefits that can aid in the transition from a student to an Engineer in Training to a Professional Engineer. By taking advantage of these resources and opportunities, engineers can take advantage of member opportunities, grow as professionals, and achieve their vocational goals. As a recent graduate in Civil Engineering, I highly recommend joining ASCE to anyone who is looking to take their career to the next level.
