The Journey

This note is a reflection on my journey over the past three years, rather than a list of my achievements. It is a candid account of my transition from the corporate world to the social and development finance sector, focusing on the financial inclusion of low income groups. It’s about the challenges I faced, the lessons I learned.

For nearly 12 years, my professional life revolved around the corporate world, with a significant portion of that time spent at 麦肯锡 . During this period, I spent eight years outside India, primarily in the USA, experiencing the dynamic and fast-paced environment of cities like New York. The corporate world offered immense financial rewards, but over time, I began to feel an inner yearning for something more. This realization led to a decision to leave behind a lucrative career and embrace a new path focused on social impact.

In a dramatic shift, I moved from the bustling metropolis of New York to the serene city of Udaipur (India), spent time in other cities in-between while exploring possibilities in which I could contribute, a transition that marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I joined Shram Sarathi , an organization dedicated to the financial inclusion of low income groups, especially migrant labourers, with a resolve to make a difference in the lives of those who are often marginalized and underserved.

Leaving behind a high-paying job, I made a commitment to myself: regardless of the challenges, I would give my best effort for at least one year. Three years later, I find myself deeply entrenched in this mission, having started my fourth year with Shram Sarathi. Will be starting my 3rd year as a CEO of Shram Sarathi in coming weeks.

The journey has been filled with numerous challenges, from adapting to a significantly different lifestyle to understanding the complexities of financial exclusion among labourers. These workers, who migrate in search of better opportunities, often face severe financial instability and lack access to essential financial services.

At Shram Sarathi , we have worked tirelessly to bridge this gap. We have introduced new financial products & services, experimented blended finance, conducted financial literacy workshops, facilitated access to banking services tailored to the unique needs of low income group (daily wages labourers & migrant workers). These initiatives have empowered them to manage their finances more effectively, secure their savings, and plan for a more stable future.

Transitioning from a corporate executive to a development finance professional has been an incredible journey of personal growth. Environment was challenging, but the support from my team at Shram Sarathi made the transition smoother. They provided me with the resources and encouragement needed to settle into this new role.

The work itself, while rewarding, has tested my resilience. There have been moments when the obstacles seemed insurmountable, and the thought of quitting crossed my mind. However, the desire to help those in need has always propelled me to stand up, dust myself off, and continue the mission. Each success story, each labourer who gains financial stability, reinforces my resolve.

As I continue this journey, I recognize that there is still much to learn. The challenges are ongoing, and the road ahead is uncertain. The satisfaction of knowing that my efforts are making a tangible difference in the lives of needy is a powerful antidote to any doubts or difficulties I face.

As I embark on my fourth year with Shram Sarathi, I remain dedicated to advancing the cause of financial inclusion for low income groups. The road may be long and fraught with challenges, but with the unwavering support of my team and the communities we serve and friends like you, I am hopeful and determined to continue making a positive impact.

If you are considering a similar shift and need someone to talk to, I can try to help. Whether it's sharing my experiences, providing inputs into the challenges, or connecting you with relevant resources.

In the end, I am a student and trying to learn which can result in some good. I have no shame in saying that I have failed and may fail more while I try different paths. I love to connect with other learners. So, if you are someone willing to connect and share your learnings, let’s connect!

Thank you for reading and do share your feedback or inputs, these will help me improve.

With gratitude
