Jordan Reeder gets inside the real Silicon Valley

“It’s not always obvious, but things – real physical things – are actually made in Silicon Valley,” says Photographer Jordan Reeder. He recently went behind the scenes at APCT (Advanced Printed Circuit Technology) for a stills and motion shoot showcasing their people and processes.

“It was dicey because we were on the floor shooting while people were going about their business,” explains Jordan. “The lighting was mixed, there was hustle and bustle, it was almost photojournalistic.” With a long shot list, Jordan and his assistant were working full steam, jumping from place to place.

Jordan has spent a good portion of his career capturing the humanity behind the world’s tech capital. “It was cool to see circuit boards being made locally,” Jordan says. “You could really see the expertise these people brought, and I just tried to keep them comfortable and natural in front of the camera.”

To add to the challenge, the client also wanted video footage to round out the image library. “We just squeezed it in whenever time allowed,” says Jordan. “I recently upgraded my Sony camera body and it shoots really nice 4K in low light. So we switched back and forth on the fly.”

The shots and video will be used to update APCT’s website. “It was all a bit experimental,” says Jordan, “figuring out how to fit in motion on a stills shoot and roaming the middle of a live manufacturing floor – but that’s what makes it interesting.”
