JON SCHUELER
Jon Schueler and artists who painted the west coast of Scotland
By Victoria Keller at ART UK
From Kintyre to Iona, to Morar and the Sound of Sleat - artists are inspired by the West Highland coast. There are views of the Inner and Outer Hebrides and glimpses of St. Kilda. Most artists come in the spring and summer months when the days are long and full of light and the weather, always changeable, is bearable. Artists started to come in earnest in the early 19th c. with a peak in the early 20th c. However, one American artist named Jon Schueler stayed in the West Highlands for five years, living and painting through the winter storms as well as the long summer nights. In this curation, we'll look at his work in the context of artists who preceded him and artists who came after, inspired by the sea and the West Highland sky.
