Joli Reading Program 2018

Now we begin a new year and shortly a new school year, it is time to think about resources to benefit our students learning.

Australia has been falling steadily in the world rankings so it's time to discuss why this is happening. My opinion and the opinion of many of my teaching colleagues is that we are moving away from the important base subjects of literacy and numeracy. Teachers are inundated with the amount of material they are expected to cover in the curriculum. There are not enough hours in the day to cover everything and so quite often particular subjects have to be shortened or put to one side. This is happening with literacy. Teachers are expected to do 100 minutes of literacy every day, great in theory but not so easy in practice with many interruptions, time constraints and other subject areas that need to be recognized.

Integrating subjects is one way teachers can use literacy, numeracy, science and technology into one succinct unit of work, in this way enabling those 4 areas to be covered at the same time. This in turn leaves room to either integrate other curriculum areas or time for explicit teaching.
