Jolene McCue 2022 Ria McBride Public Service Award recipient

Congratulations to Jolene McCue Senior Advisor at Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment who is this year’s recipient of the Ria McBride Public Service Award.

The Ria McBride Public Service Award honours the first woman appointed to the Chief Clerk of the Public Service Commission in 1955, overcoming prejudice and obstacles as a woman in a then male domain. The Award aims to help women working in the Public Service to progress their career aspirations through tertiary study.

Jolene McCue (she/her) is a senior advisor at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. She is also an independent marriage and civil union celebrant, community advocate, devoted aunty, and fiancée.

As a queer, Māori woman living with a chronic health condition, Jolene has overcome many obstacles and continues to navigate daily challenges. Jolene draws on her lived experiences of discrimination and bias to raise awareness and create safe spaces for other people. She is committed to shaping a safer, more inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand, especially for tamariki.

Reflecting on winning the Ria McBride Public Service Award, Jolene says:

“It is truly life changing. Due to severe health complications as a teenager and other barriers in the years that followed, studying at this level has always felt completely out of reach for me. I am grateful for this opportunity so I can continue learning and growing to help drive essential changes in the Public Service.”

Jolene will be using the award toward a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Māori studies and sociology, minoring in gender and sexuality studies.

“By understanding complex social issues and intentionally creating safe spaces for all voices to be heard, we can respond in meaningful and sustainable ways. I want to see an Aotearoa New Zealand where everyone has a sense of belonging. Where we truly honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we embrace our multicultural society, and everyone has access to equitable opportunities so they can thrive.”

So lovely to see this Joelene, so well deserved and I know you will make the most of this wonderful opportunity.

Wow, huge congratulations to you Jolene! Such well deserved recognition of your awesomeness. I hope you are justifiably proud of yourself x
