Joining a team as a leader or being promoted to team leader? You need to read this

Hi from Cécile!

Today, let's talk about transitions.

Leaders always evolve (and should). Change and transitions are part of their story.?

Whether moving from one position to a higher leadership position or from one team to a new team as a leader (internally or even in another organisation), that's a big leap.

That brings real challenges because you have to manage change for yourself and navigate the adversity that comes with new roles, responsibilities, and people.

Changes are not always smooth or even welcome by others. This is when you need to show your leadership skills and talent and win your team members' hearts.

Discover the challenges and solutions for two very common leadership transition occasions below!

How to join a new team as a leader seamlessly

Joining a new team or organisation as a leader is a game of priorities ???

But which ones do you need to focus on?

On the one hand, you need to establish yourself as the leader and justify the management’s decision to assign you to that new role.

On the other hand, you need to prove you can bring results that are synced with the organisational goals and be able to induce positive change and make an impact.

Plus, you find yourself in a new environment where you need to identify, communicate and network with the new team members and stakeholders.

The challenge is real. Who said it would be otherwise?

Whether joining the team after an internal promotion or as a new entry in the organisation, you will face doubt, resistance, and judgment.

You may even doubt about yourself or your skills and talent.

“Am I the appropriate person for this role in the first place?”

That’s all part of the game, and you can’t avoid it.

What you need to avoid is to exert your authority and power using your title or position.

Instead, you should focus on two things: - Understanding the team dynamics and how every member can perform at their natural best - Communicating effectively

Those are two fundamental success factors that will help you: ?? Manage adversity and resistance ?? Build trust and rapport ?? Establish credibility

How to navigate the transition from team member to team leader

Congratulations! You’ve been promoted to a pivotal role- the team leader! Now what?

It sounds exciting, but more often than not, it can also be distressing.

Big changes take place.

Your former colleagues have now become your team members.

Your previous role as a team member has now been upgraded to leading people and driving change.

- Some of your team members may not accept your new role or the changes you bring to the table.

- In some cases, interpersonal dynamics are so strong that you may soon become a pushover, finding it hard to say no to anything your former colleagues ask or propose.

- Another common symptom is developing Impostor Syndrome, doubting your skills, talents, and accomplishments, and having a persistent internalised fear of being exposed as a fraud.

The transition to your new role may not be without its thorns, but it's a path worth treading.

There are two main ways to overcome the hurdles and become a true leader for your team.

?? Silence your saboteurs. Those recurring thoughts that you don’t have what it takes to become their leader or exert authority within your new role without losing momentum sabotage your actions and growth. Working on your mental fitness and resilience can help you fight back and retain control.

?? Communicate like a leader. Despite the problems or resistance to change, honest communication is always the best way to keep the channels open, resolve issues, and become the glue that helps your teams stick together and grow with you as their leader.

Leaders may indeed go through difficult transitions. Whatever the case or the circumstances, they need to be versatile so they can navigate the changes, challenges and adversity they might face. The more versatile they are, the more skills and competencies they possess and can leverage to survive the transitions and thrive.
