Day 3 of SAIL did not disappoint! The conference attendees were honored to hear from Congresswoman Summer Lee (PA-12), whose keynote highlighted the societal impact of AI. Her insights on the challenges and opportunities that AI presents to her constituents were invaluable. Selina Carter, an AI Institute for Societal Decision Making (AI-SDM) PhD student in Statistics & Data Science and Machine Learning at CMU, introduced the congresswoman and set the stage for her talk. A huge thank you to Debbie Tekavec, Tim McNulty, and Congresswoman Lee's staff for making this happen. Internally, our strategic impact leaders met to discuss education and workforce development, laying the groundwork for future directions. We’re actively connecting different education and workforce efforts across AI-SDM and looking to galvanize cross-institute collaborations to maximize our impact. In the afternoon, Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives Philip Lehman from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science was a standout on a panel discussing institute sustainability and navigating the ever-changing AI research funding landscape. The panel's recommendations outlined key strategies for achieving sustainability in the fast-moving field of AI, including techniques that mature institutes are successfully implementing. The day culminated in a delightful Institute dinner and (of course) an informal gathering of AI Institute project managers. What a fantastic conclusion to an incredible summit! National Science Foundation (NSF) and Simons Foundation just launched two AI Institutes to help astronomers understand the cosmos! From the early telescopes made hundreds of years ago by Galileo to the sophisticated astronomical observatories of today, people have built increasingly innovative tools to probe and measure the cosmos. Soon, researchers at two new institutes funded by NSF and Simons Foundation will build a new breed of astronomical tools by harnessing the uniquely powerful abilities of AI to assist and accelerate humanity's understanding of the universe. The new National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes (AI Institutes) for astronomical sciences are part of the NSF-led National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes program, which now includes 27 AI Institutes across the U.S. The two new Institutes will each receive $20 million over five years: $10 million from NSF and $10 million from the Simons Foundation. Both institutes aim to advance the capabilities of AI beyond just astronomical sciences so it can become a more useful tool for all scientific disciplines involving large datasets, sophisticated models, and the iterative process of generating and experimentally testing theories. This summer, we hosted the largest cohort in CDA REU history! We welcomed 22 students from 20 different institutions with varying backgrounds to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to work on #DigitalAgriculture research projects. Working alongside their mentors, students learned about and applied #AI, computer vision, image and data analysis, and more to real-world challenges.
