Celebrating Men's Health Champions and Advocating for Change

Dear Esteemed Members and Supporters,

Welcome to the November edition of our monthly global newsletter, presented by the GYMHA Incorporated, Australia team. We are delighted to share with you some exciting content that we hope will inspire you.

This month, we have the unique opportunity to reflect on two significant events that resonate deeply with our mission: International Men's Day on November 19th and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25th. This month, we embrace the theme “Men’s Health Champions – Creating a Healthier Future!” as we recognize the pivotal role men play in fostering a culture of health, wellbeing, and respect.

Men’s health is often overlooked, yet critical. According to the World Health Organization, men face a higher risk of various health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders. It is crucial that we encourage open discussions about these topics, dismantling the stigma surrounding men’s health. As champions, we can advocate for regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle choices, and mental wellness, ensuring a more robust future for ourselves and our communities.

In conjunction with our focus on men’s health, we must also confront the stark realities of violence against women. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, commencing on November 25th, serves as a powerful reminder that everyone has a role to play in creating a safer world. Studies show that nearly one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. This is unacceptable. As advocates for health and wellbeing, we must stand united to promote respect, equality, and safety for all.

Empowering men to take charge of their health and to be allies in the fight against gender-based violence is essential. Together, we can lead by example, fostering a culture where men not only prioritize their own health but actively support and protect the rights and dignity of women.

In this newsletter, you will find resources, stories, and strategies designed to inspire and educate. We encourage you to engage with these materials and share them within your networks. By working collaboratively, we can create a healthier future and a society free from violence and discrimination.?

Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our community. Let’s harness the power of this month to drive change, inspire action, and embody the spirit of true health champions.

Together, we are making a difference.

Warm regards,

GYMHA Team

Breaking the Silence: Combatting Gender-Based Violence in Somalia

By Abdimajiid Yusuf, Volunteer Member at Global Mental Health Awareness (GYMHA)

As we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, kicking off the 16 Days of Activism, which culminates on Human Rights Day, December 10th. This day is a powerful reminder of the global need to end gender-based violence (GBV), including in Somalia. Decades of conflict and instability have affected women and girls across the country, but local activism continues to raise awareness and challenge these issues.

The Pain of Gender-Based Violence in Somalia

Somalia has one of the highest rates of GBV globally. Years of conflict have worsened the problem, especially in regions with weak security. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) identifies several forms of GBV in Somalia, including domestic violence, sexual violence, exploitation, child marriage, and female genital mutilation (FGM). These practices are deeply rooted in cultural norms, making it difficult for survivors to seek justice.

Embracing a population health approach to improving youth mental health

By Arthur C. Evans, Jr., PhD?

As a nation, we continue to see troubling trends in youth mental health and well-being. Emergency departments saw a 20% increase in cases involving children’s mental distress between 2019 and 2022, with reported cases of suicide and self-injury rising by a shocking 50%. The prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms among youth has been growing for a decade, but the experiences of stress, isolation, and uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic only elevated them further.
