We are sure that your inboxes have been flooded with Black Friday deals and discounts this week. The overproduction and overconsumption that the holiday promotes is bad for both people and the planet, and we invite you to join us in taking a stand against it by not shopping the sales and boycotting Black Friday.
The problem is best illustrated by the fast fashion industry. For example, Pretty Little Thing have once again made headlines for their sale of up to 99% off, bringing garments down to pennies. The problem of selling items for so little is that clothing?costs to make, ship, and package – the outrageously low price tags therefore completely disregard the work that has gone into making it and raise concerns over how much workers are being paid to do so. By undermining the value of the item, the discounts also promote a throwaway culture, further adding to the planet’s waste crisis.
?While such sales may be a dream come true for many consumers, particularly in the current economic state, the reality of it only being possible off the back of human exploitation, and the degradation of the natural environment it encourages, can no longer be ignored.
?There is only one Earth, and we all have a part to play in looking after it, and the people it inhabits. Join us in boycotting the holiday and take the time instead to consider the impact that you, as a business or individual, are having on people and the planet.
