Join Us Along the Banks of the Susquehanna River
We are very excited to take you on a tour of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail. This is a 13-mile trail that runs from Falmouth to Columbia along the Susquehanna River. Along our journey, there are a lot of different stops and landmarks to take note of.
The first thing we want to point out is a prominent quarry that was operated by John Haldeman in 1847. Rich in limestone, the river valley was home to a number of profitable quarry operations throughout the years. At one time, there were four lime kilns that produced agricultural lime for fertilizer as well as lime for whitewashing and plaster. As the steel industry grew, however, so did the need for dolomite, which was mined from the quarry and used to extract impurities from steel. As a result, the quarry grew significantly in the early 1900s and through World War I.
The limestone quarry has some beautiful views of the river. It’s a great place to have a picnic lunch as you see the limestone. It’s very beautiful. They almost look like salt mines.
Another stop along the way is a spot where you can view bald eagles. They are very plentiful along the Susquehanna River as there is plenty of fish and other food for them to eat. In fact, there is a lookout where you can see two nests up in a giant sycamore tree.
The bridge that spans the Susquehanna from the eastern shore to the western shore is an old railroad bridge. Today, fishermen like to hang out near the bridge on the river to catch the many different types of fish in the river, including walleye and bass.
Finally, Marietta Point is another great spot on the trail. There’s a boat ramp you can use and a beautiful view of the Susquehanna. There is also a great pavilion here that seats more than 100 people.
If you have any questions for us about the trail or if you have any real estate needs, don’t hesitate to give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you.
