Join JMSU in marking World Hijab Day

John Moores Students' Union and LJMU will be marking World Hijab Day on Monday 3 February.

World Hijab Day is an annual event founded by Nazma Khan in 2013. The event takes place on 1 February each year in 140 countries worldwide. Its purpose is to encourage women of all religions and backgrounds to wear and experience the hijab, raise awareness of why they wear it and challenge misconceptions.

This year, Lila Tamea, Vice President (Academic Quality) at JMSU, invites students and staff to experience the hijab for the day. Lila will be in the James Parsons Building with some hijabs ready to answer questions and have a chat.

Talking about the importance of World Hijab Day, Lila commented:

“Polls suggest over 71% of hijabi women experience some form of discrimination for wearing hijab (WorldHijabDay 2019) and with the current political climate, it is becoming an increasingly important celebratory day for Muslim women all around the world, with hosts of events using it to challenge those misconceptions; reminding people that it is a choice, and a choice of freedom.

So - even if you don’t try on the hijab, wear one of our stickers and support the event and tag us by using our hashtag #WorldHijabDayJMSU!”

JMSU will be in the social space in the John Parsons Building on Monday 3 February from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

If you would like more information or to collect one of the hijabs, please contact Lila on [email protected]
