Join Facebook as a Software Engineer

To start with, YES, Interviews for a Software Engineer is pretty hard, but of course, not impossible. All that makes this hurdle possible is preparation. Now, lets find out how the process exactly is.

How is the interview process at Facebook?

The interview process goes on for quite a few days. So, let me put it in points, to make it simple for you.

  • Step 1: The process starts with a phone call or an email from a recruiter, once they find you online, or you apply directly, or a friend referred you.
  • Step 2: Once you are through with the recruiter’s questions, a coordinator will schedule you for a phone screen or an initial in-person interview of 45 minutes with one of your potential coworker. The main purpose of this is to slot you with someone in your general area of expertise. You will get to know who they are and what they do, and get opportunities to discuss about interesting things from your resume, your skills, motivation, interests, and so on. Apart from this, the bulk of the time is spent on coding exercises. The interviewer will send you a link to a collaborative editor and ask you to solve some programming problems.
  • Step 3: If you manage to clear this round, you will be invited to attend a series of interviews at Facebook office premises. Trust me, every interview will be a coding exercise that you need to solve on a whiteboard and answer questions raised on your code by the interviewers. All they try to find in you are: comprehensibility, enthusiasm, motivation, generalism, coding and programming architecture.
  • Step 4: If all goes well, Facebook will be delighted to offer you a job.

How to prepare for a Facebook Interview?

Here goes you to-do list.

  • Dedicate time for preparation. Do code katas, practice interviewing, solve previous interview questions and gain insights from tech-talks.
  • For phone-screens, be in a quiet place with good internet connection and a handy headset.
  • Practice writing code in simple text editors.
  • Work on the language you are most proficient in, no matter, even if it is not in trend.
  • Don’t create hyped expectations in your resume. Write exactly what and how much you are confident on that you know.
  • Be flexible while developing a solution. Don’t fall in love with your own solution and defend it for no reason.
  • Revise techniques that you may not use every day, but are very useful when you need them: recursion, graph theory, tree traversal, combinatorial problems, parsing, etc.
  • Knowing about how things happen under the hood is really important.
  • Participate in interview surveys.
  • Feel free to question interviewers. Let it be a both way traffic.
  • Finally, Relax and Chill. Facebook is way too cool, and so it wants you (their potential employee) to be.

Hope by now, you have figured out how exactly to walk into Facebook. Wish you all the very best…
