I am a Headhunter at STN, specialised in shipping and commodities trading ranging from metals, agriculture to energy products like oil and natural gas!
What are the main skills needed in the industry?
I often get asked what the main soft skills are required in our industry… I would say being an amazing communicator, being resilient, proactive, hardworking, flexible and having an entrepreneurial mindset are key skills.
I often hear trading and playing poker in the same sentence! In poker you need to be patient, analytical, study your opponent and accept losses. A trader needs a solid strategy and be perseverent.
Want to join the industry?
Learn about commodities, be curious and create a network.
If you are outside the industry, pursuing a Master's degree in commodity trading would be a good idea to gain an understanding of commodity markets, operations, strategies, and risk management techniques. Programs like the one offered by the COMMODITY TRADING - UNIGE at the University of Geneva cover commodity markets, trading strategies, risk management and this course has an amazing reputation.
Why YOU should join the industry? Did we not convince you yet??
The oil and gas industry is a major force in the global economy, representing one of the largest sectors worldwide. In the United States alone, this industry contributes to 4.8% of the nation's GDP. Soft commodities, ranging from essential foodstuffs like cereals and cotton are used in everyday products and form the cornerstone of international trade.
Despite its challenges, the commodity trading industry remains captivating, reflecting its profound influence on global commerce.
You have probably already heard the famous quote:
“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”.
A very cliché saying, and one of my favorites... as you spend?one-third of your life?at work (90,000 hours!). Our industry is forever changing and adapting to new technologies and energy markets.
Passion makes a great career finder and will help you transpass the barriers that come with any job. In this sense, the exciting industry that is commodities trading would be a great move.
