Join the Digital Career Development Programme and learn to build digital services that matter
UK Home Office Careers
We are the lead government department for immigration, passports, drugs policy, crime, fire, counter-terrorism & police.
Hi, I’m Claire, and I’m a recruiter for the Home Office. Applications are now open for the Digital Career Development Programme (DCDP), which gives you the chance to work on government digital projects delivering better tech solutions to the public.
The DCDP is an 18-month contract combining development activities, structured learning and charity projects. At the 12-month point, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for a permanent role and promotion with the Home Office. This structured programme is an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues and begin your own career in government.
There are more than 40 places available on the DCDP based at locations across the country.
In return, we offer a competitive starting salary, a Civil Service Pension with employer contribution rates of at least 26.6%, as well as a range of other brilliant benefits including flexible working and 25 days annual leave on appointment, rising with service.
About the programme
The DCDP has 7 strands covering the different job families that make up the Home Office’s digital profession. These are:
Interaction Designers - You will test ideas through prototyping, challenge assumptions and build simpler, accessible solutions based on user needs.
IT Operations - You will play a key role in the provision of IT service support at the Home Office, contributing to the delivery of high-quality services.
Associate Developers - You will support the delivery of software components as solutions to technology challenges
Content Designers - You will work to create clear, user-led content for digital services, testing ideas, challenging assumptions and designing accessible services that everyone can use
Product Managers - You will use your knowledge of user needs and business goals to frame and solve problems and set priorities for delivery teams.
Service Designers - You’ll look at the end-to-end experience of our services, to identify problems and reimagine how the service should work
DevOps - You’ll be responsible for maintaining and supporting our digital services and/or platforms. Your role is proactive, checking relevant metrics and performing platform updates when necessary.
How do I apply?
We strive to make our recruitment fair, open and to appoint only on merit, and as a result, elements of our selection processes can sometimes feel unfamiliar to external candidates, so hopefully it’ll help if I explain how they work.

1.???Application
Applications for this programme will be assessed using Success Profiles, which will examine your Behaviours, Technical Skills, Experience and Strengths – exactly which will depend on the role you apply for. As a first step, you should submit your CV, a Personal Statement and some examples of your work. These will be assessed to determine whether you have sufficient experience in the essential criteria for the role. Detailed information about the requirements for each of the 7 strands can be found in the links below.
We’ll ask you to remove any information that identifies you, for example your name, age or place of education, so that you’ll be judged on merit alone and not on your background, circumstances, race or gender. This is really important to us.
2.???Interviews and aptitude tests
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a telephone interview, followed by a face-to-face interview. As part of the second interview, you will be asked to complete a task that is relevant to the role.
For DevOps and Software Engineering – you’ll also be invited to complete a coding test which assesses your technical skills.
3.???Pre-Employment Checks
Candidates who are successful at interview will be made an offer subject to the successful completion of your pre-employment checks. Following this a start date will be agreed. Please note failure to show the correct documentation during your interview will cause delays to your pre-employment checks and security clearance processed being completed.
Feedback
We are only able to provide feedback if you are invited for an interview or assessment.
