In a survey that I did when carrying out research for my book Quietly Visible: Leading With Influence and Impact as an Introverted Woman, 73% of introverted women who were senior leaders said that they experienced self-doubt.


These women had achieved great things in their careers yet still doubted themselves. This negatively affected their self-confidence and their ability to be assertive, speak up, exude leadership presence, and have influence and impact to the fullest level that they were capable of.


For introverted women starting out in their leadership journey, not yet having had the lived experience of many years of leadership, I find that these challenges are magnified for them. Uncertainty and fears about the unknown, fuel the negative self-talk.


This is where my free 5-Day Mind Cleanse can help. It is a 5-day challenge that will help you change the unhelpful, negative thoughts and beliefs you have about yourself, and increase your self-confidence.


Each day for 5 days you will receive a video to watch with an exercise to do for that day that will help you self-reflect, increase your self-awareness, learn, and identify how to move forward.

Many introverted women don't like self-promotion and in an ideal world, your work would speak for itself and you would get recognition on the basis of your outputs and achievements. However, your work is not always going to be seen by those who need to know about you and if you don't let them know, how will they know how fabulous you are? Introversion is an extremely old archetype, it one of the 'big boxes' people are put in, a label they have to wear. It's quite inaccurate. Imposter syndrome is not a syndrome. The imposter phenomenon has been extrapolated forwards from the findings on two academics from a cohort of 150 female university students in mid-tier Unis, in mid 1970s USA. It does not = self doubt. There were a cluster of four very common experiences observed within this cohort “generalised anxiety, lack of self-confidence, depression and frustration” (Clance & Imes, 1978 p.242). There are many reasons why people feel less confident than they might like, one of them is that they should do, because they are at the moment inadequate in many ways. Telling them they're all that and bag of chips takes away a necessary drive to improve and acquire knowledge and wisdom. People at the early stages of anything in which it requires experience and knowledge to progress are just experiencing "newness". I say "just", it could also be ageism, racism, and/ or sexism too. They may be experiencing a period of liminality and yet to feel confident in a role because they are in this state of 'limbo', of transition. Self-promotion and over-confidence may not help.
