Johnson & Johnson just walked the walk...

Companies talk about patients in their marketing campaigns, say they put patients first, and create patient education materials. Most of it falls flat. Unless you are ready to get in the trenches, I can’t hear a thing you are saying.

Healing happens in quiet rooms through tears and time. Sometimes long nights with friends and wine. Even in ballrooms with sequins, stories, and songs. Healing happens in relationship and in community with others. Healing happens when you walk with the patient.

This weekend I was chosen from a large group of patient advocates across the US and abroad to participate in a very special conference, HealtheVoices. It brings together patient advocates with a variety of disease states and conditions to learn from each other. We were lifted and empowered while being embraced in a space that left us seen and heard.

Words to further explain the event escape me other than to say it was one part magic and another part love. Imagine shinning a light on all your broken pieces having them filled them in with love. The best hugs, immediate connections, sharing knowledge, and storytelling while creating a path forward.

HealtheVoices is more than a conference, it’s a movement. J & J just redefined corporate patient advocacy for me. We don’t have to settle for companies talking the talk. Be better. Walk the walk.

Follow me as I create a space in ophthalmology for patient advocacy. Work with me to discover how your company can walk the walk. Dare to be better!
