John's experience on Young Lives vs Cancer's Voice Board
Young Lives vs Cancer
We’re the charity that helps young people and their families find the strength to face everything cancer throws at them.
John joined our Voice Board to give back after we supported his son, Alfie, through cancer treatment. Here he shares his experience and explains why others should apply.
Why did you join the Voice Board?
Being a parent of a child with cancer brings about a whole host of worries and concerns, in all honesty, these never leave you. Getting support from Young Lives vs Cancer throughout my son's treatment has been a source of great comfort. Giving something back to the charity that has supported my family felt like the least I could do.
What has your experience of taking part been like?
Every interaction I have had with Young Lives vs Cancer as a Voice Board member has been overwhelmingly positive. You really feel included in the decision making process and that you are having a positive impact on the direction that the charity takes.

What have you enjoyed most?
Seeing the inner workings of Young Lives vs Cancer has been really positive. It's incredible seeing the passion that every member of staff puts into their work. I take pleasure knowing that I'm a small cog in the machine that is bringing solace to children and families affected by cancer.
What has the impact of taking part been for you?
Meeting people that have shared experiences with me and my family has been therapeutic. Also, knowing that I can take mine and my son's experience and share them with the charity to hopefully improve the experience for children and families in the future.
Why should others apply?
I couldn't recommend enough to apply for the position. If you have been on the receiving end of the support Young Lives vs Cancer gives, then this will serve as an act of 'repayment'. Getting the chance to influence the direction of the charity is also immensely rewarding.
