John McCain: A Leader
Jeff Immelt

Like many others, I mourn the loss of John McCain. I knew John well and had massive respect for him. I served on the Board of the McCain Institute, dedicated to promoting international leadership. John was a thought leader in defense strategy, immigration and many other policy areas that intersected with GE.
In 2011, I was in a small group of CEOs that visited the Middle East after the Arab Spring. John led the delegation. I had the chance to walk with him through Tahrir Square surrounded by thousands of adoring Egyptians who were in the midst of seismic change. John was the trusted face of America and his mere presence was reassuring to a country looking for friends. I saw another lesson in leadership; that showing up in a crisis – even when there are no simple answers – promotes trust.
I made many trips to Vietnam over the years, often visiting the Hanoi Hilton where John was held prisoner. I was amazed – John was viewed as a hero. His legacy helped shape a productive economic relationship 50 years after the war.
I traveled the world extensively, trying to sell American products. I knew the best part of our character: Americans are tough-minded optimists; we are aggressive competitors and good friends. John represented the best of who we are. He was my hero, and I will miss him.

6 年I had the pleasure to meet the Senator when he walked by me beneath the Capitol a few years back. When I greeted him, he stopped to greet me back which I hadn't expected. His interest to engage the every man spoke volumes.?
