For Joe Cookney, joining Hoxton Wealth’s Trainee Wealth Manager programme has been a transformative experience, full of growth, challenges, and opportunities. From mastering client relationships in the UK to establishing himself in Dubai, Joe’s journey embodies the exciting path available to young professionals in financial planning at Hoxton.
A Passion for Financial Planning from the Start
Joe’s interest in financial planning began early, influenced by family conversations and educational choices. During his A-levels, he studied banking and finance, and through conversations with his family’s financial planner, he realised the profound impact this profession could have. Motivated by the opportunity to help others secure their financial futures, Joe pursued a degree in finance and ultimately joined Hoxton’s UK office in St Albans.
“One conversation with someone in financial planning changed my perspective,” Joe shares on the Hoxton Life Podcast. “It showed me this is a career where I could genuinely make a difference in people’s lives.”
Cutting His Teeth in the UK
Starting out as a Business Development Manager, Joe’s initial training was hands-on, involving real client interactions from day one. He learned the foundations of client relationship management by observing and working alongside experienced colleagues. This immersive training, combined with mentorship from Hoxton’s team, gave Joe a solid foundation to build his confidence and skills.
Sam Oakes, host of Hoxton Life and Head of Creative, remarks, “We believe that putting new talent like Joe in direct client roles early on accelerates their growth. It’s not about waiting to be ready; it’s about diving in, learning by doing, and being supported as you go.”
The Hardest Part: Mastering Business Development
Joe describes business development as one of the most challenging parts of the role, yet also the most rewarding. From initial calls to understanding client needs, every interaction became a valuable learning experience. Guided by mentors, Joe learned how to navigate these early conversations and lay the groundwork for strong client relationships.
“Nothing teaches you quicker than getting on the phone and having those conversations,” Joe explains. “I’m grateful for the mentors here who’ve shown me how to approach each client with confidence and professionalism.”
Taking the Leap to Dubai
After six months in St Albans, Joe was offered the chance to join Hoxton’s team in Dubai. To ensure this was the right step for him, he spent two weeks in Dubai to experience the environment firsthand. The visit confirmed what he’d hoped: Dubai was a vibrant, opportunity-rich city and the ideal place for him to expand his horizons. Transitioning into the Dubai office provided him with valuable exposure to Hoxton’s international clientele, allowing him to work with clients across the UK, US, and other jurisdictions.
“Dubai has been an incredible move,” Joe reflects. “It’s opened up new ways of thinking, both personally and professionally. The city’s energy is contagious, and being here has really broadened my perspective on international financial planning.”
Thriving in Dubai’s Unique Culture
Since moving to Dubai, Joe has embraced the city’s dynamic culture and the inspiring atmosphere of Hoxton’s Dubai office. Connecting with colleagues and clients from around the world has deepened his understanding of diverse financial needs and strengthened his appreciation for the industry’s global reach.
“The culture here is amazing,” Joe says. “I’m surrounded by ambitious, supportive people, and every day I feel like I’m part of something that’s growing and pushing boundaries.”
