During the Q & A portion of one of my recent Resume Webinars, a participant asked this interesting question:
"Doesn't JobScan and ChatGPT help my resume get through ATSs?" - E.M.
Here's what I answered ...
JobScan is a word cloud tool where you input a job description, and it spits out key words it recommends you include in your resume.
ChatGPT uses AI to automatically rewrite your resume to match the job description.
The biggest problem with both of these tools is the job description that you use as an input. The published job description rarely includes even 50% of the current search criteria that recruiters use to search for resumes. So, this means that JobScan gets less than half of the keywords right.
And it means that ChatGPT misses over 50% of the information needed to output a resume designed to match search criteria ...?
... because the published search criteria have changed.

Published job descriptions are written by HR and legal departments to protect the employer from HR lawsuits (not to help you get interviews). They do this by publishing generic job descriptions covering many similar positions in different departments, locations, products, business units, subsidiaries, and for different hiring managers. And they are written a year or more before the job is posted. The hiring managers for each position recognizes that the published job description doesn't meet their current needs, so they send an email to the internal recruiter, with the search criteria they want - usually at least 50% different than the published job description criteria.
Maybe you've gotten feedback that the reason you didn't get an interview, advance in the hiring process, or received an offer was that you didn't meet a necessary criteria ... that was never mentioned in the published job description. That's because the actual job description changed, but not the published description in the posting.
And that's the reason why JobScan and ChatGPT don't help your resume get through the ATSs - The published (wrong) criteria is input, so neither tool match enough criteria to help you get an interview.
The wrong criteria is what causes these tools to provide false hope that they'll help you get interviews.

7 个月While it's understandable that job descriptions may become outdated over time, wouldn't using JobScan still provide some valuable insights into the keywords and skills that are commonly sought after in a particular industry or role? Are there ways job seekers can use this information alongside other strategies to improve their chances of getting noticed by ATS systems?
