#Jobs for Ukraine: Supporting war refugees

As a result of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, European countries are now on the verge of a refugee crisis. Approximately 10 million individuals from Ukraine have sought asylum in neighbouring countries. These countries, being good neighbours, have welcomed these refugees with open hearts and wide arms. But, most importantly, this was also the need of the hour and needed immediate action.

However, on a more practical side, integrating such a high number of visitors into any economy is not easy, especially while the entire world is still dealing with the aftermath of COVID. Although providing housing and other necessities of life can be a strain for many hosts, these nations still demonstrate great hospitality in supporting the victims of the?Russo-Ukraine war.???

How European countries respond??

European countries have shown and continue to exhibit the finest mobilisation in relocating refugees.?Poland?outperformed other countries in being the most welcoming to Ukrainian migrants, taking in over half of them. The government put up special reception facilities, temporary hospitals, and accommodation to provide visitors with information, food, and medical supplies. Some countries, such as?Ireland and the Czech Republic, even waived official visa requirements and entry bans to make it easier for Ukrainians. The?European Union?also paved the way for displaced Ukrainians by establishing a unanimously agreed regulation by all member states that permits them to enter any of its member states without a visa and stay there for three years.???

Jobs for refugees ?

Almost half of the Ukrainians have lost their jobs since the war began. Along with the immediate supply of housing and other resources, these people also need to find a means to earn a living for their families and rebuild their country.? This is the reason all members of the European Union agreed to provide employment opportunities for those fleeing to these member states.??However, integrating a large influx of refugees into the labor market is not as simple as it seems. It involves special and dedicated efforts instead. The hired refugees may face issues like the language barrier and unfamiliarity with new market norms. Additionally, employers need to invest resources to determine the skills and experience of the migrants as well as find suitable jobs for them.??

Role of organisations in finding jobs for Ukraine migrants ?

Despite the challenges, organisations and businesses are doing their best to create work for refugees. Member states are optimistic about absorbing up to 500,000 workers into labor markets. The?New York Times?released a piece two months ago regarding the efforts of the corporate sector to re-establish jobs for Ukrainians. According to this report, German businesses step forward to hire tens of thousands of Ukrainian migrants across various industries. Portugal's corporate sector aims to provide language training for those looking to work in a new environment. Child care during working hours is the biggest hurdle for displaced women who have left their husbands behind while relocating. Lithuania's on-site child care facility is the best initiative to facilitate such women.??Major global corporations banded together under the title "Tent Partnership for Refugees" to help Ukrainian migrants. They have set up?online portals and training resources to connect displaced Ukrainians with employers. Some well-known staffing organizations, including Manpower, Adecco, and Randstad, also joined hands with other businesses to ensure the survival of these migrants. Adecco Group also launched a platform named "Jobs for Ukraine."

This platform helps employers find displaced Ukrainians without any hassle in the recruitment process. This initiative of the Adecco group helped thousands of Ukrainians find jobs.???British businesses such as?ASOS and Marks & Spencer are offering jobs to Ukrainians taking refuge in the UK. Two clothing giants in coalition with other significant companies are pushing the Government to open its door for women and children who have been displaced as a result of the Russian onslaught.???

The stats exhibit that the European countries, both on Government and corporate level, are showing extraordinary generosity in relocating displaced Ukrainians. But in the long run, this hospitality can impact the host nations concerning the availability of financial and organisational resources. As the time of war and the number of refugees in the future is unpredictable, creating jobs for these migrants is the most appropriate solution. This will not only help share the burden of the host economy but also aid in rebuilding the lost sense of financial security in displaced Ukrainians.
