Lex has been with Singapore Pools for more than 5 years, and he is currently an Area Manager in Channels Division, Retail Operations.
Tell us more about your work in Channels Division, Retail Operations.
I was in charge of The Majestic and Bedok Off-Course Betting (OCB) outlet under Singapore Turf Club (STC) before I crossed over to Singapore Pools when the horse betting operations was transferred from STC to Singapore Pools in 2019. My role has since evolved and expanded to include the management of more branch outlets, retailers and chain stores.?Beyond ensuring standard procedures are closely adhered to, I also constantly rethink customer interactions and prioritise their experience with us. This requires us to ask for and act on customers’ feedback and rallying the team together to deliver the best. I am grateful for the exposure and opportunities given by Singapore Pools.
?What’s your daily work like?
A typical workday would see me travelling around Centre East area (i.e. Serangoon, Bedok, Chai Chee, Siglap, & etc.) to ensure smooth operations in our Branches, OCBs and Retailers. On a day-to-day basis, I’ll work closely with my colleagues at the outlets to understand the operations and issues they face. At times, it can be challenging, but definitely fulfilling when issues are resolved timely.

Can you share with us the differences in the digital branch operations as compared to a normal branch, and how has it impacted customer’s experience?
Singapore Pools has launched a new retail concept to strengthen customers’ retail experience. With a whole new revolution of our digital branch, customers are able to place a bet on their mobile phones at their convenience. During special draws, it saves customers’ time from the snaking queues at various outlets. It also provides the added benefits of responsible play as the app allows customers to set betting limits so they do not go beyond their pre-set weekly betting budget. It also provides an overview of customers’ winnings and losses. All these features have greatly enhanced the overall customer experience. In terms of environmental significance, going digital helps to reduce the environmental impact from paper waste amongst others.?
What gives you the most job satisfaction?
Being able to see myself grow professionally and personally. A positive work environment encourages and motivates me to try new things and increases my productivity. The career growth and development opportunities provided by the organisation are vast and varied as long as one is willing to take charge and actively seek out training opportunities. For instance, we’ve developed and implemented an app for staff to self-report Covid-19 status when the pandemic struck. We were able to do this in-house due to training opportunities made available to employees by our colleagues in Singapore Pools Academy. I’m thankful that Singapore Pools has a culture of ongoing learning in people development.
