JOB WELLNESS:

Healthy boundaries, effective communication, leaving a toxic job?

Well-being at work is more than just an absence of stress or dissatisfaction. It is a complex concept that involves a balance between the physical, mental and emotional aspects of the employee’s experience of the work environment. Good well-being at work is characterized by traits such as satisfaction, engagement, mental and physical health, positive relationships and high performance. It is closely linked to personal well-being – the concept of work-life balance.

Well-being at work is not only an end in itself, but also a key determinant of organizational success and employee well-being.

Characteristics of Well-being at Work

1. Satisfaction and Commitment

Employees who feel good at work are generally satisfied with both their role in the company and the working environment. They feel connected to the mission and values of the workplace and are motivated to actively contribute to the achievement of the goals.

2. Mental and Physical Health

Well-being at work promotes the mental and physical health of employees. Employees feel safe, supported and respected in their work environment, which helps to reduce stress and prevent or reduce burnout.

3. Positive Relationships

A key component of well-being at work is positive relationships: both between colleagues and between employees and managers. Open communication, trust and collaboration are promoted, which creates a harmonious and productive working climate.

4. Autonomy and Job Satisfaction

A certain degree of autonomy and control over day-to-day activities in the workplace is necessary for employees to enjoy well-being at work. They feel valued for their contribution and have opportunities for career development and progression.

5. High Performance

Well-being at work is associated with high performance and increased productivity. Employees are actively engaged in their tasks, creative and strive to achieve the goals set by the workplace.

In conclusion, wellbeing at work is not only an end in itself, but also a determinant of organizational success and employee well-being. Promoting and nurturing wellness in the workplace not only improves the working atmosphere, but also increases employee loyalty, reduces staff turnover and contributes to organizational goals. It is a vital aspect of organizational culture and must be prioritized by both managers/bosses and employees in an effort to create a healthy and productive work environment.

The negative impact of feeling sick on performance and job satisfaction

Malaise is characterized by a negative and harmful work environment that affects the mental, emotional and physical health of employees.

Workplace toxicitycan be caused by:

???? interpersonal conflicts,

???? abusive or discriminatory behavior,

???? lack of support and recognition,

???? overwork or excessive pressure from management or colleagues.

It is associated with stress, burnout and low employee morale and productivity. Despite the clear evidence that working long hours can be detrimental to both employees and employers, many professionals still find it difficult to overcome ingrained working hours habits.

Here are some more reasons why work-life balance is important for both employees and the workplace

Fewer health problems

When we are stressed and overworked, we risk jeopardizing not only our social life but also our physical and mental health.

It’s no secret that when we are overworked, tired or stressed, our health will suffer. A work-life imbalance can lead to a variety of symptoms that can affect our well-being. These range from colds to serious health conditions such as strokes and respiratory problems. A UCLA (University of California) study involving more than 10,000 participants found that employees who worked three or more hours overtime had a 60% higher risk of developing various cardiovascular diseases than those who did not work overtime.

Encouraging employees to look after themselves and strike a balance will significantly limit health problems and absenteeism.

Less burnout

Burnout is when we feel overwhelmed and unable to cope with constant demands. The negative effects of burnout can affect every aspect of our lives. The inability to separate work and personal life will massively increase the chances of burnout. A tool to assess the level of work-related stress and the measures to be taken to control it has been used extensively. This instrument, known as the Work Stress Scale (WSS), allows the individual to personally assess the degree of stress encountered in several areas: relationship problems with superiors, separation between work and family, problems with colleagues, bureaucratic constraints, poor prospects for career development.

More engagement

Helping employees to find work-life balance will increase their level of engagement.

More attention

When we find and maintain a healthy work-life balance, we develop greater control over our concentration and ability to focus on the task at hand. This will improve retention rates, productivity and ultimately yield and profitability.

The negative impact of feeling sick on performance and job satisfaction

  • self-awareness and self-reflection – identifying your own needs and limits;
  • planning and prioritizing: improving techniques to manage time and tasks effectively;
  • communicating effectively with others;
  • active listening: improving techniques to better understand colleagues’ and superiors’ perspectives;
  • constructive feedback: giving and receiving feedback in a positive and constructive way;
  • clarity in communication: expressing ideas and expectations clearly and concisely;
  • conflict management: the appropriate approach to manage and resolve conflicts in a constructive way.

How and when to quit a toxic job

Knowing when and how to quit can be difficult. Here are some factors to consider when you’re planning to leave your current job:

?? Current situation assessment – ask yourself why you feel dissatisfied and unfulfilled in your job.

?? Analyze your options – When resigning, you need to weigh the pros and cons of quitting your job. If resigning leaves you without an income, consider all your other options, such as applying for another role in the same company or finding another job with better hours and higher pay.

?? Plan ahead – Make sure you have funds in place for when you might be out of work for a few months; ideally, you should have a job ready before you resign.

?? Give notice – It’s essential to give your current employer at least two weeks’ notice before you resign to ensure that you leave on good terms. Some jobs require significantly more notice, even several weeks or months.

?? Completing Tasks – Before your last day at work, review the tasks/projects you’re working on and determine the best way to organize them so that it’s easy for your boss or colleagues to take over your tasks.

Conclusions

Well-being at work promotes employees’ mental and physical health. A key component of well-being at work is positive relationships between colleagues and between employees and managers. Open communication, trust and collaboration are promoted, which creates a harmonious and productive working climate.
