Mike’s Leadership Advice - "The Right People":
One of my favorite books of all-time is Good To Great by Jim Collins. He talks about getting the right people on the bus and the wrong people off the bus. Who matters more than What; the people on the bus are more important than what kind of bus it is, its make and model, its color, its engine or even its destination. In his interviews with executives, Collins was told, "If we get the right people on the bus, the right people in the right seats, and the wrong people off the bus, then we'll figure out how to take it someplace great." If you get really good people together, good things will happen. But a great bus filled with the wrong people is not going to achieve much. Great vision without great people remains irrelevant and unproductive.
The right people can adjust to change. Covid changed everyone's buses; where we thought we were heading the day before looked completely different the next day. Organizations that had the right people on the bus survived, some even thrived. But buses filled with the wrong people are still sitting on the side of the road. I have ridden buses with Church groups and School groups all over America, from Colorado to Florida. Those long trips can be tiring, but they can also be a lot of fun. We still tell stories of bus trips that happened 40 years ago and built some great relationships along the way. Once on a trip to a Model Schools Conference in Washington, DC, our bus broke down outside of Knoxville, TN. We all hitched a ride to a Pilot Truck Stop and chartered another bus. If you talk to anyone who was on that trip, they will still share great memories; it was the people who made the trip memorable, not the bus. Sometimes as Leaders, we buy a shiny new bus, then find people to get on it to fill the seats. We decide on a program, an activity, a curriculum, a "destination", and that becomes the priority, with little regard to who is on the bus or what seat they are in. One CEO said, "I wasn't sure exactly where to take our company, but I knew if I started with the right people, asked them the right questions, and engaged them in conversation, we would find a way to make the company great."
A few points that Collins makes:
- When in doubt, don't hire - keep looking. The ability to attract and keep the right people is what makes an organization great.
- When you know the wrong person is on the bus, act. The wrong person on the bus will eventually make everyone on the bus so miserable that they will get off the bus.
- Get the right people in the right seat. Sometimes, the person is not the wrong person, you just don't have them in the right seat and just a slight change in position or assignment, can make a huge difference.
This time of year, people who have worked in Education are retiring and it is interesting to read and listen to their interviews. They talk about the people they worked for and alongside of, and the children they taught. No one talks about that "exciting" curriculum they taught or those "inspiring" Professional Development activities they sat through. They remember the relationships, how they went through good times and bad times with their co-workers, how they were mentored by others, and the fun that they had. They express their gratitude that they were able to spend countless hours with people that they loved and respected, working together in a meaningful profession. They don't talk about the bus, they talk about the people on the bus. Keep Leading, MM
