Job Seeking advice for aspiring data scientists.

I get a lot of messages here on LinkedIn from aspiring data scientists. Usually, it happens like this:

  1. Add me as a contact
  2. Wait 45 seconds
  3. Ask me if I can give you a referral for a job at Intel

Folks, this is a terrible way to go about it.

For one thing, nobody with integrity will give a personal referral on behalf of somebody they don't know. If you just added me on LinkedIn, don't ask me for a personal referral. Even if you send me your resume, or you point out my position at the company and express a general sense of interest in the field, I honestly can't help you out.

Here is the advice I will give you:

  • Check out careers.intel.com and look for open reqs / internships before you reach out. Have one or two in mind. Copy the description and familiarize yourself with the language and terminology.
  • Learn more about the business domain of the company and group that you're telling me that you're interested in.
  • If we're talking about Intel, learn about these things: microchip manufacturing, test and assembly, microchip business units at Intel, major customers and market segments. 30 minutes with the 10K or 10Q will teach you a ton.
  • Display a real interest in the problem space listed in the job req; indicate that you will be a quick study in the business domain and bring thoughtful ideas. If there are technical terms you don't understand, learn to understand them.
  • Only then, reach out!

It's a funny world for data scientists right now -- there are a lot of good opportunities so look for one that will fit your interests. At the same time, there are a lot of applicants, so display that you are really interested by doing some homework. Homework is half the job when you get it, so you might as well get going now.

Lastly, write a good cover letter to go with your application -- those really stand out and help to show you're not just shot-gunning every opening you come across and that you will probably bring real passion to the role if you land it.

Good Luck!
