It is the time of year to think about career development and moving on up, here are some inside tips from David Morgan to help you stand out and find the perfect role.
Build your personal brand
Your personal brand is how you present yourself to the world, both online and offline. It reflects your values, skills, personality, and goals. Having a strong personal brand can help you stand out from the crowd, attract the right employers, and showcase your potential.
You could create a professional portfolio website, blog, or video channel that showcases your work and achievements. You should also optimize your social media profiles, especially LinkedIn, to highlight your skills, endorsements, recommendations, and accomplishments.
Audit your online presence
Social media can be a powerful tool for your job search, but it can also be a potential pitfall if you don’t manage it carefully. Here are some tips to help you prepare your social media before you start your job search:
Search yourself and see what comes up
Check your privacy settings on all your social media accounts and make sure you’re comfortable with what’s visible to the public. Delete or hide any posts, photos, or comments that are inappropriate, offensive, or irrelevant to your professional image.? Oh, and have a professional personal email address!
Be more noticeable
Use your social media profiles to highlight your qualifications, accomplishments, and interests. Share relevant content and comment on articles, blogs, videos, or podcasts, that demonstrate your knowledge and passion for your industry. Engage with other professionals and influencers in your field by commenting, liking, or sharing their posts
Be consistent and authentic.
Make sure your social media profiles match your resume and cover letter in terms of your name, education, work history, and skills. Use a professional and clear photo of yourself as your profile picture. Avoid posting anything that contradicts or undermines your personal brand, such as complaints, rants, or negative feedback.
Don’t be shy
Networking is one of the most effective ways to find new job opportunities, get referrals, and learn from others in your field. Networking can also help you gain insights into the industry, the company, and the role you’re interested in. Don’t be afraid to expand your network, you should attend relevant events, webinars, workshops, and conferences. You should also reach out to your existing contacts, such as former colleagues, classmates, mentors, and friends, and ask them for advice, introductions, or feedback. You should also join online communities, forums, and groups related to your industry and interests.
Personal growth and mindset
The job market is constantly changing and evolving, and so are the skills and qualifications that employers look for. To stay competitive and relevant, you should always seek to upgrade your skills and learn new ones. You can do this by taking online courses, certifications, or degrees that are relevant to your field and career goals. You can also volunteer, intern, or freelance for projects that allow you to apply and showcase your skills. You should also keep up with the latest trends, news, and developments in your industry and role.

Its hard work looking for your perfect job
Even though your work experience and skills do not change when you are writing your CV, your resume should change depending on the role you are applying to. For each resume you send out, you should highlight only the accomplishments and skills that are most relevant to the job at hand.
Set your goals
Work out what’s important to you. Set short and long term objectives, what do you want to achieve?
Think about what kind of work environment, culture, values, and benefits you are looking for in an employer. Make a list of your priorities and preferences, and use it as a guide when researching potential employers.
Research, Research, Research
Read reviews on sites like Google and Glassdoor, ask your contacts and check out the company websites, social media, and news articles to learn more about their history, mission, vision, and projects.
Hack the Applicant Tracking System
Many employers use software to scan resumes for relevant words and terms in the Job Description, so make sure you include them in your CV and cover letter. You can find these keywords by running the specification through AI or good old fashioned reading!
Quantify your achievements
Its all about metrics! Instead of just listing your responsibilities, evidence how you added value to your previous roles by using numbers, percentages, or other measurable outcomes. For example, instead of saying “managed a team of 10 people”, say "led a team of 10 people to increase X by 25% in six months".
Be resilient
Sometimes you will have to kiss a lot of frogs, don’t give up even if you do not hear back or get rejected, the perfect role is out here and everything happens for a reason.
