Job seekers: Have you been out of job for months and yet to secure a job? Do this while you continue job hunting! It may work for you! Nothing to lose

Recently a few active job seekers, some jobless for months and some years poured their hearts out to me. They have practically done what is possible in this world to secure a job, such as attending career fairs, writing to companies, personally delivering resumes to companies, filling up countless application forms, connecting to potential hiring managers on LinkedIn, enlisting help from family and friends, sending mass emails to random email addresses of potential companies, prayed and hope and yet remained jobless. I believe many out there are in this situation and just do not know what to do anymore. They feel like giving up already.

Are you in a similar boat?

Albert Einstein once said,?“Insanity is?doing?the same thing?over and over again but?expecting different results.”?If you keep the usual mantra and past traditions of job application, you will not see different results. What else can you do?

Here is something to cheer you up and possibly give you a boost to try again but differently!

Read on further. You have nothing to lose. But please don’t do speed reading. Read word by word, line by line, until you can understand the way forward.

As an experienced job seeker, you must be good, possibly skilled, or even an expert in a particular field or topic. If you are not, then ‘something must be rotten in the state of Denmark’. An issue with some or many candidates is their attitude of not bothering to be good (or skilled or an expert) at something from their past careers/jobs. Firstly, they were focused on a job and not a career. Can you differentiate between a job and a career? If not, watch the webinar in the link below.

This must be avoided at all costs.

Many think being obedient employees, clocking in and out religiously will make them an expert or highly valuable people. Unfortunately, it may not. That gives you a salary at the end of the month. A piece of advice to future job seekers; learn your job well, be the best in it, be the best in your company, embrace new frontiers, network, read, learn, articulate your experience/views, or do whatever you can to make you an expert in your field. So much so that you are highly sought after, this line of actions will save you someday when you are out of a job. Who cares if you have worked for umpteen years? Who cares if you have a degree, an MBA, a PhD, or a series of certifications? Who cares if you have worked for a leading MNC? What matters most is what you are made of!

For those who fit this bill and are jobless today, try this.?You have nothing to lose! This may make you better. It helps you to indirectly prepare for your next interview. You might have something magical to share with potential hiring managers in your future interview.

Step 1

Identify your skills/expertise/profession and identify the right industry.

Step 2

Connect to the right professionals and potential hiring managers in that industry/profession. Keep connecting until you exhaust the allowable limit set by LinkedIn for the month. And once it is refreshed the following month, continue further. Remember, do not connect to any random person but find the right targets!

Step 3

Start doing research on new technology in your field/expertise. Research on new trends, market movement, challenges, advice for companies in that industry, upcoming technologies and etc.

Step 4

Publish your reports on your LinkedIn page. Put it up on your Facebook page, if possible, as well. Those connected to you may start noticing your write-ups. It can be short or long, but it must be of substance. This is one way to showcase your ability and articulation skills to potential hiring managers without applying for a job. Take it as a precursor to an interview. There are many hiring managers on LinkedIn who pays attention to what is being posted. Many of them, including me, are always on the lookout for potential team members. It could be for today’s needs or even for tomorrow! What more if that person is in your connection? For all you know, they might even call you up for a meet-up. It may be for an interview or to know more about this research/finding. Your write-up must attract attention and be catchy/interesting so that people want to know/speak to you.

Another possible outcome is that you might even get a light bulb moment and find a way out of being jobless. You might fall in love with writing, that’s a career as well. You might find a supplier who wants to sell their technology in Malaysia, and you happen to be someone they can connect with.

During this period, change your LinkedIn headline to, for example:

Actively researching consumer behaviour on social media while job hunting as a social media strategist. Connect to me at?[email protected]

Or

Actively researching cost-saving techniques in the manufacturing industry while seeking a job in a manufacturing organisation. Connect to me at?[email protected]

Revise this title frequently with new ideas when you discover new ideas/findings.

Step 5

Repeat steps 2, 3 & 4 over and again.

Try this if you have not. It may work for you!?
