Job seekers - change your email address!

Job seekers really should consider changing your email address every so often. (and no not only if your address is [email protected])

When you are looking for a job it can get humbling and many times you apply for several jobs, and some jobs you aren't really interested in nor would take. Job hunting boards and employer sites make it very easy to apply for multiple jobs without much thought (perhaps TOO easy).

Are you aware that employers can see how many positions you have applied for on their account?

It's understandable that when you need a job or want to make a change you might just apply for 'everything' and 'anything', however, this is not a good impression to give to potential employers, that you are just applying for any and everything.

If you have applied for 5 different, unrelated positions in their company in the past month, that doesn't exactly show you as a targeted job seeker who is aware of their skills, strengths and what they want.

If you are a 'serial' or serious job seeker applying for multiple positions or even a candidate with a new and improved resume consider changing the email address you use to apply every so often -which is how they track you in their system; be sure to also change your email address on your resume when you do this.

Doing so will cut down on employers seeing that you applied, for instance, 10 times with them; because once they see you've applied multiple times, they may assume you aren't a good fit or they would have hired you already (which is why I suggest this for a new revamped resume as well); or perhaps even worse, that you are clearly not a focused job seeker with a keen awareness of what you want and what you offer.

Update: In hindsight I realize it's more complicated than simply changing your email address, you would need to create a new profile, however, for the reasons outlined above, I firmly believe it is well worth it in some circumstances. And my fellow Recruiters,  I realize you may not appreciate this suggestion, however this article is intended to assist job seekers.
