Job Searching with Right Target - Vendor vs Distributor vs Systems Integrator
100 Days Of Cloud Blueprint (Chapter 17)
Having worked at all these three types of companies, if I were given the chance to redo and replan my cloud career transition, I might have had different execution plans.
I am going to share with you my thoughts and what would I have done differently to be?more effective?in the?job search and job application.
Among the three,?vendor?is at the?top?level in the ecosystem,?distributor?is at the middle level and?Systems Integrator (SI)?companies are at the third level which is closest to the end-users.
Simply put, to anyone inexperienced in the cloud industry, looking for a job role offered by vendor should be the hardest, as?vendors usually have more resources to attract the best talents.
Moreover, with the?supply?of lots of?experienced candidates?from distributor and SI companies (their channels and partner networks), there is slim chance for vendors to consider an inexperienced person.
Thus I would probably not spending much effort applying for a job at the vendor level for my first cloud job. Yet, I would still consider all the?internship or trainee openings?and see if my qualifications could meet the requirements. This would be my strategy towards vendors.
In addition,?before?preparing for any cloud certifications, I would compare the?longer term potentials?and?work culture?of?different vendors?to prioritise which vendors’ certifications to take first. I would also consider the?cloud certification cost?as well as the?renewal policy?of the certifications.
For?distributors, they are the?bridge between vendors and SI companies. According to my experience, distributors usually need to help SI companies to solve their business or technical enquiries (from end-users). Distributors usually act as the?first-level support to SI companies. In case distributors encounter technical issues that could not be solved by their engineers, they would seek support from vendors by submitting support tickets or via vendors' 5x8 or 7x24 support service.
Thus I think distributors would also have a high tendency towards recruiting experienced candidates to tackle these day-to-day challenges of SI companies.
For my job application strategy towards distributors, I would first check which companies are distributors of my desired vendor(s). I would keep this list of distributors for job application in the future (2nd cloud job).
I will put more efforts focusing on job application at the third level, SI companies, for my 1st cloud job.
My Cloud Replan Priority
Since I believe that?getting the first cloud job?earlier is better, in order to increase my success rate of getting job interviews or offers and be?more effective?along the process, my priority is thus: SI companies > Distributors > Vendors
