I received an e-mail from one of our graduates that, she is still looking for job in the field. I wrote her back as the following and I think this can be beneficial in different perspective to many more people. Here it is:
Hi (Person's Name),
It is great to hear from you. It is good to put the word out if you are in the job search. Smart move.
Suggestions:
1- Have your portfolio to be fixed, and make sure you have no technical errors or omissions on that, then print a good copy as your sales tool. Employers need to see your quality work to believe.
2- Start a walk-in (just sending e-mail would not work) tour and make sure you start from the greatest companies that you really like to work for. Check (Local Architectural Association) website for all registered architectural companies, name, address and so on. OR see (Local Construction Association) web site for more companies in the field of construction.
3- Have some copy of your resume and an information card (Business card) with you during the search (Walk-in) and leave one of each with the potential employer.
4- Contact the companies you met, and follow up with them after you left them with your resume around 2 to 3 days after you where there. They need to see that you are seriously looking and keep follow up in a timely fashion manner.
5- Job search is a full-time job and you need to be involve of that from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Keep searching.
6- Don’t give up. You have more than enough knowledge and capabilities that you can even imagine. Keep walk-in and show up. Employers like to see real people.
Please stay in touch and let me know how are you doing every month. I will keep my eyes open for you. Thank you very much. Good luck.
Regards,
